Building up a spare generator for my '56 Pontiac and got a new armature. I put everything together and tried to put the pulley nut on, but it wouldn't start! Figured out it has reverse threads! Everything else is exactly the same as the other armatures. Anyone know where to find a reverse thread nut for this thing?

Oh yeah.....I remember hearing something about that.......
What gets me is that the part number that is stamped on it is correct, but the threads are backwards... I may be looking for a new armature instead. |

just turn the generator around. wait until you try to change a tire on a rainy night with left-handed studs.

Dang! Really that easy? Figured it would at least be an odd size, thread count, or something!

It is an odd thread size .665-20 I doubt NAPA will have it. Corvair generators did use a reverse thread nut, since the generator turned CCW. It was supposed to help the nut from comming loose. Try Clarks Corvair parts or the salvage yard. I may have some old ones some where in the shop, PM me if you want me to go a diggin.

My buddy Dan says a corvair generator would also have the brush holders angled the wrong direction and the pulley fan blades would also be angled the other way. He suggests another generator if this is the case...

Hey fellas!
Thanks for looking.......in this case, ONLY the armature is (maybe)Corvair. The entire generator is '56 Pontiac, but some wires broke near the commutator on the original armature. I found an armature with the same part number rebuilt in a sealed box, and aside from the threads, it looked identical. Fan, case, field coils, brush holders, etc. all '56 Pontiac......but this oddball armature? Now I'm wondering if it will work together! Like I said earlier, I may just need to locate a new armature! Thanks! Johnny P.S. Larry, I hope to get dimensions a little later today. Keep your eye out for a PM! |
