Seen at TechnoClassica in Essen last week. An enormous newly restored 8 Litre Bentley with an airline style fabric body. Looked fabulous - I'd love to build a replica using BMW V12 running gear.
That is one mean looking car. Imagine driving quietly down a British road in the mid 30's in your Austin of the period and having that come blasting up in your rear view mirror at speed.
T'was a hot rod in it's time, albeit a wealthy man's factory hot rod! Love the matte & gloss paint scheme, wonder if that was original, must've been, can't imagine the restorer would have done it otherwise?
sure it wasn't a replica you can buy one for 250k (£) ish edit: sure does look like racing greens product range on the back wall , my money is on a replica based on a post war Bentley mk6
Did the math on this massive beast's huge overhead-cam inline six. 8 litre (7972 cc)sohc L6 = 4.33" bore x 5.51" stroke. WOW!
I did some net hunting and here are more photos and info . http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/car/1698/Bentley-Speed-Six--Blue-Train-Special-.html http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z9510/Bentley-Speed-Six.aspx
6.597 to be exact. Or 402.6 ci with 180 Hp. 140 inch wheelbase. 4850 lbs. That's about the size of my old Chevy Crew cab.
Just get out your wallet.I'm sure you could go to the Fruit Farm and Stanley Mann will provide you with the basis for the rest of the conversion. A number of years ago one of the big dollar classic car clubs did a tour through Alaska. There were 3 Bentleys. One was a coupe very similar to this one .It's body was metal and not the Weyman style coachwork.Very mean looking English car!
... and it's padded too. Looks like a neat way to make a one off body. These "special metal joints" just seem to be bits of aluminium flat strap in T, L and V shapes with appropriately drilled holes. Maybe I should look out a mid-90's BMW 850 or 750 for a couple of thousand quid and have at it ;-) would have to finish my Modified first though.
I dont know, it's very cool, but I aint feeling it. Assdragger, bobbed fender disproportioned top, extended front, sidemount...it is a sweet car for sure but I cant say its on my wish list. Unless it picks up chicks and comes with left hand steering.
Seeing it close up it had masses of "presence". It looked incredibly powerful with an impression of speed. To me, it was much more impressive than the Bugatti Veyron across the hall.
That car has been on my TOP TEN list forever. If I win MegaMillinons tonight it will be mine and free rides will be given to HAMB members. Bob
