Haha maybe it wouldn't have been so dangerous if the dumb cop didn't sit in the middle of the road.

Would that have been a great time to be a racer.
I wonder what the multi carbed engine was near the begining?

Gil Stratton (the guy in the cap with flipped up brim) was also in 'The Wild One'. When I was a kid he was the sportscaster on the channel 2 news here in L.A. -stick

hummm... might be your connection. Start the video and then press pause and go fart around for about ten minutes. Come back and press play... that might work.

The shortcomings of the Harley's mechanical brakes are clearly evident as are the brain functions of the policeman.

Very cool, Just when that cop shoes up you can see the car in the back getting all squirrly. I thought for sure he was going to loose it.

I think Jack looks a lot like Bob Bleed, or is it the other way around?

  23. Anybody recognize the engine at 2:19? Looks a little like an early BMW?

Look close and you'll see one car go sideways when the cop is in the middle. No idea where he went, but only 5 cars made it past the cop.

At the beginning you see a Marmon V16, again when it goes through the traps. That's the one with the long hood. The Don Montgomery books show this car.

LA's San Fernando Valley in the early '50's had long straight roads through the orange groves like that, pre sub division. The grids were laid out but nothing developed yet.

Usually these races were held at night. Partly because school was out, partly for the 'stealth', partly because traffic was lighter, and partly because it was cooler on hot summer days. These are flatheads after all.

That exact footage with the hot rod pack racing past the cop was used in 2 or 3 period hot rod movies, including my all time favorite, "The Devil on Wheels"...

It's too bad that hot rod was a murderer, cause it was TOTALLY earning Jack some tail, much to the dismay of her boyfriend.
