Novice wrencher here... so forgive me if this sounds dumb. I have about 4000 miles on my rebuilt flathead (52 Mercury)... when should I check my valves and how often? Is it something a novice could do with guidance? Or is it something I should have the pros handle? I'd like to learn, but don't want to screw it up either!
Do you have adjustable lifters, or non-adjustable? If you have adjustable lifters, check out this from Red's Headers http://www.reds-headers.com/html/red_s_engine_talk_5.html
You are going to need an adjustment tool or have drilled lifter bores to stop lifter rotation when you proceed to lash valves.Lots of fun and swearing for the first time "newbie" A coulple of hours for shure. Tig.
They're adjustable, but that's really for assembly only. Unless they start getting noisy, they need no further adjusting.
Thanks, Mike! I had a feeling that was the case when I searched the internet and couldn't find any info on adjustment once the engine was assembled. Cool! One less maintenance issue to deal with!
