My boss gave me these as a bonus for this two weeks. I have heard of them and know they are a 50's and 60's style glass packs. Any info would be great! Any videos of someone's car with them would be helpful! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
If I remember right they are packed with stainless steel "wool" I've never heard a car they sound bad on nice raspy snarl. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Thanks for the info guys! That flat six sounds damn good. I'm running a pretty non-traditional engine since it kinda fell in my lap, however, i took the EFI off and slapped a carb on it (5.3L). Any videos of a small block running them? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
No. I think he said glass packs. If looking for modern mufflers for that 50s deep mellow sound, try Brockman Mello-Tone Steel packs. They sound great
I just put a set of 22" smithys behind the 390 in my merc,I really thought they would rap a little louder... But they still sound great. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
You will hate them.....just go ahead and send them to me....!!!! I run smithys on my 51 ford and I will never run any other muffler!! They are the shit!! They have that beautiful mellow sound running down the road but when you put your foot in it they really get with it! You will love them!! Jim Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Just depends on what sound you like. The short ones are a bit Snappier....the longer ones a little more mellow. Some give A louder droning effect during highway driving. What length Are the ones you were given? Do they appear new or used? About all you can do is put them on the car and drive to see WhAt you get from them.
Well I like the deeper droning sound when driving and cruising. I like to hear the motor screaming when I get into it however. They were put on a 56 belair at the shop but the engine was never fired so they sat outside for a couple months. No carbon build up inside at all. Also the body on them is 22" long with 2" inlet and outlet. I have 3 inch on my pickup now but I can choke it down Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Have some behind my nailhead. I prefer the mellow tone of them, over the "look at me!" cackle of cherry bombs.
Smithy mufflers were originally called steel-packs which referred to their packing made of steel chips and turnings NOT steel wool. Steel wool doesn't survive long in the acidic atmosphere inside exhaust parts.
I like what I'm readin in the posts.. I have 3 inch exhaust into a Y-pipe with a 4 inch tip. I'm gonna just have to put one on and see what it sounds like! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Don't have a problem with Smithy's ... they're on my coupe. But I wanted a more distinctive sound for my roadster and went with a pair of Porter's instead. Check out their website for multiple vids that will let you listen to them.
22" ones on my 292 y block magic sound.. But at 65 mph sounds like a diesel boat, don't mind it. Had some on my little 21 stud flathead and didn't make a sound.. Went to 12" open style better.
Running them on my 283...not overly loud, but cruising at ~60mph they are just plain "Awesome Music" Love em.....
I used them on my 52 Chevy. I bought the 30 in. ones. At first they were too tame but the sounded better with a little time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBI_Q...ature=youtu.be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVyEK6auiKs
Smithy's are a good choice, especially if you live in a neighborhood with whiny neighbors who are sick in the head and don't like loud exhaust. They idle quietly with a great mellow tone, but when you goose it they can really roar, particularly in the 3000-&-up rpm range. Plus, they don't really drone too bad. But if you really want that classic rumble and pop, I'd recommend a set of Porter shorty's. They've got a killer rumble & roar.
Smithy's have been around longer than any other "Performance" muffler - since the 1920's! Ermie Immerso (3 time AMBR winner) bought the company back many years ago, and they had been changed from the original steel chips to glass wrap. We (PerTronix) bought the company from Ermie about 13 years ago and continue to build them the same way, only with a better quality glass, right down to the unusual blue paint.
Are Smithy's directional, due to the orientation of the internal louvers, or doesn't it matter which end is the inlet?
Yes they are directional. but you can mount them either way. If you mount the open end of the louver towards the motor they will be quieter, but will burn out faster. If you mount the away from the motor the will be a little louder but will flow better and last much longer.
