Is it possible to flip the intake manifold on a Model A banger, making it a downdraft unit? I know you'll have to change carbs (which means carb flange modifications or adapter), but I was jut wondering before I tear into things and monk something up!

MATA,
Cool setup. Sorry if I didn't explain it well enough.... I want to use the stock unit, but flipped! Will it work with the stock exhaust? If I keep the carb low enough, will I still need a fuel pump? I have a gaggle of old 94's....I can rebuild one for this, if it will work.

It should bolt up with no problem, but you will run the risk of vacuum leaks at the block surface. The intake will no longer be bolted solidly to the exhaust manifold, only by the half 'ears' on the intake to the studs on the block, which are shared with the exhaust. Maybe tightening the manifold bolts regularly would help, not sure. The next problem will be finding a down draft carb to match the mounting flange. Finally, I bet you will need a fuel pump. Should be real easy to try though, won't cost anything to flip it over and bolt it up.

Your question seems to have been answered --
also there are old (Stromberg/Bendix) downdraft intakes, and new ones.... http://www.earlyfordstore.com/model_..._equipment.php

I believe that there's been a down draft intake in the HAMB classifieds for a fair price.

Bobby
I have never paid attention to the tabs for bolting to the exhaust manifold....I see what you're talking about! I saw those intakes in the classifieds. I'm going to try to find one a little closer to home to play with....shipping those would coat more than the units themselves. I'm going to look at bolt flanges and their locations... Thanks for the input.

Can't cost more than $20 or $30 to ship a Model A intake in the lower 48.

Rusty, you're probably right. My deal is, he has 3 of them and is selling 3 for one money. It'd be $50 to ship all three plus the $50 for the parts. Kindofa spendy "experiment". "D

I've got one that was made by brazing a 94 carb base to the top of an A manifold. They then bolted a sheetmetal cover where the original carb was attached. That way the manifold can still bolt to the exhaust manifold. It is a pretty slick piece of hillbilly engineering. I can get you a picture later if you are interested. It's currently too damn hot to go outside without bursting into flames. If you like you can have it for the price of shipping.

Sounds like a good deal -- use one, sell the others.

I don't have any pics but I've seen the intakes modified to take downdrafts. For me, I like what Bill "BCChopit" fabricates. I've got one of his intake on my banger with a 97.
