  1. Hey Ryan, thanks for bringing this back into the "limelight"
Can't remember how I first heard about Troy's work, but I'm a better photographer for it. Started this thread way back in '06.

Actually just realized that the Halloween season is perfect for these night-time creapy shots. :p

Troy...what kind of camera do you use? Do you haul a generator with you or is everything battery-powered (hard to imagine batteries only).

    Thanks again you guys.

Stude Trucks: Actually, it's this place: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=...16,-110.852888&spn=0.017075,0.018733&t=h&z=16

It's not "top "secret", it's been well documented for decades. Google Davis-Monthan AFB. The aircraft at DM AFB are not junk, but are being held in long-term storage, so it's a highly restricted military installation with very strong security. With other aircraft boneyards its the usual "dangerous place" and "we don't have insurance for visitors" mentality. The owners who have been sympathetic to me and let me shoot their facilities have told me they get up to 10 requests for photo access every day. "Them airplane geeks drive me nuts! I wish they'd leave me alone, I'm tryin' to run a business here." is the general response from these guys.

McLoad: I use a Canon 20D and a tripod. My lighting is all hand-held flashlights and strobes. All battery powered. Remember, I'm sneaking into many of these places, so I need to travel light: all of my gear fits in a small daypack so I can get in and out of places undetected. All the technical info is here: http://www.lostamerica.com/technique.html

Interesting and elaborate explanation. I would have never imagined exposure times of 4-10 minutes given the sensitivity of today's digital gear. Thanks....nice work. (I shoot w/Nikon D200)

I think that this technique brings the subjects back to life, by adding romantic colour and vibrancy to otherwise faded and forgotten everyday icons of the past.

That Stude with red on the inside looks like something out of a 50s movie about aliens or something like that.
