This well made fiberglass hardtop was on a 1950 Ford convertable.. was said to have been made in the early or mid 50s.. it originally had a wrap around plexiglass rear window (long gone).. and metal trim pieces above the side windows.. appears to be the same configuration as Victoria.. still in very solid condition.. anybody out there ever seen one before?.. any info?.. Thanks!

I have a very vague recollection of some company in the late 50's or early 60's selling those for various convertibles to make them into a hardtop. I think the ads might have been in Mechanics Illustrated or Popular Mechanics. Can't swear to it, but it does ring a bell.

Sort of unobtanium now. In '61 Chevrolet offered a f-glass top for converts. I saw one at a guys house in Sheridan, WY 15 years or so ago. The top looked pretty much the same as a '62 Impala 2 dr ht. I'd heard of them but that's the only one I ever saw.

They were sold in cold climates for winter use. Often, a convertible during the summer was like a totaly different car in the winter.

Look in old Motor Trend, Car Craft etc mags from the fifties. I vaguely remember the ads, they were offered for a few years in the mid fifties. Probably 1951 or 52 to 55 or 56. There would not have been much market for an expensive top for a used car over 5 years old back then.
