It is great to see this feature on the HAMB. Dougs son, Roy is a good friend and a long time HAMB member (Racer5C) and is a big hot rod and racing history buff. I know he will enjoy seeing this.

One of Doug's sons, Roy Caruthers (Racer 5c) will chime in with TONS of info.. That car was defiantly super nice for the era sporting lots of chrome. Roy has a Flatty powered Model A that my ol' man lettered #'s on the door and put the C&C Spl. on the hood like the modified.

    Good story.. Thanks,

I am working on a replica, but finding all the correct parts is kind of hard, I finally scored the correct 1923 franklin front axle and steering. Hope to have it done within the next year

We have a clone of this car here in NZ. It has been driven in every kind of speed event possible I think, including Drags, Salt, Hill climb, Dirt track, even on the road.
Here is some shots from another forum of the Dust-up dirt track racing.

trying to figure out what to do for hubs, and a few other odds and ends have most of the hard stuff finally, actually I got an e mail from my step dad yesterday he had lunch wth Chrisman yesterday and they were discussing the Franklin Hartford Friction shocks on the car, I don't think they were on it when my dad had it, but I am not sure.

"They are Franklin Hartford friction shocks. He made the rears and the fronts are the original"

  10. For a car that had so many owners it is amazing how little its overall appearance changed.

Definitely the most beautiful modified ever.

I built 2 models of this car several years ago. The black #6 and the Christman version. Gave them both away, so no pics. I always liked this car and it's good to see it on here.:D

Great post! And you know what else is interesting about it? Apparently Earl Bruce wrote the story headlined "Hot-Rod Jockey."

Was he a magazine writer--and a '29 roadster owner--in addition to running the Big Top bar and owning (still) that '40 Ford with blanked-out quarter windows?

Someone should do a post exclusively on Earl Bruce.

    Just sayin'!

The Caruthers era of this car is my favorite.
There's a great Gus Mannum drawing of it when it was Doug's. I'll try to scan it.

thanks for getting this thread/ball rolling.

I have been told two different things, originally I was told it was a modified 32 chrysler, but Jim Miller from the AHRF told me he has documentation that it is a Miller Grill Shell

Why don't you post what parts are missing... I'm sure some of use would contribute to this historic build or direct you to someone that may have them...

  22. I'm guessing your going to build it with the short wheelbase and flathead? In my opinion, that would be the proper way. No need to have a twin to the Chrisman version.

I think you bought an old sprint car grille shell from me a few years ago didn't you?

thanks for posting the pic Joshua.
The white version does look pretty serious.
    I'm thinking Miler shell too.
Please post more specifications if anybody has 'em. Rear axle, tranny?

This car has been at the top of my list for years , i had some of the parts to build a copy ..axle , grill , frame ...But for me the Caruthers version is the Best, the long w/b just kills the #25 car for me

Did this car start out as a T, or was it a complete ground-up build?

I think at one point it was a short wheel base, then converted back to long. I assume the long wheel base is best for the drags, right?

Significant iron no matter which perspective one views it. I am certain Roy (Racer 5C) will do it justice in his tribute build.
