Ive got a 50 caddy and I have a fresh built 485 caddy motor [472 bored 60] with mts forged 10 to 1 pistons mts lopey cam and edelbrock intake mts says should make about 500 hp and 600 ft torque but Im kinda wanting to rebuild and hotrod the 331 in the car which motor do you think will be my best way to go. I plan on driving the car alot and would like for it to be dependable for long road trips but run and sound mean.

331. Keep the hot rod engine for a hot rod.

I know the big motor will be the best bang for the buck but the 331 is really growing on me but old hotrod parts for the 331 are expensive and it still wont make all that much power but its the original motor and they do look cool. I dont know.

As much as I like and respect flatheadpete, I'm gonna say just the opposite
![]() Put the 472 in there and save the 331 for a hot rod. Big block, more torque in the heavy Caddy, plus it's not as "pretty" as a dressed early Caddy engine. Put the 331 in a light rod with no hood, and you're a rockstar. Win-Win.

Thats what ive been thinking too the 331 looks so good it needs to be seen and the big car needs the big torque but I got alot of friends trying to get me to keep the 331 so I just wanted more opinions.

Are your 'friends' planning to help out with the costs associated with a relatively expensive 331 rebuild? ![]() Big heavy car = big inch big torque .

A car like that, with that style, is always going to look best with the Hood shut. parking it with the hood open ruins the lines.
If you agree, go with the big motor. No one would see the 331 anyway. |

I just went through this recently with a nailhead I bought for the Nash. Although the nailhead will have plenty of power, it's a closed engine compartment so it won't be seen. I decided to keep it for my next project...
