Wow Doreen what an amazing story. Growing up on the east coast in that era must have been fantastic. I lost my father to pancreatic cancer 3 years ago but i grew up on a almost identical story my father and his friends started a car club called the beast builders in rosendale ny 12 original members my dad was the president in 1955 i still have his car club plaque from a company called speed gems. About a years and a half ago there was a article in a issue of car culture deluxe of a guy who collecter car club plaques in calf and there in the artical i spotted a beast builders plaque from rosendale ny .sent him an email to find out where he got one because i could account for all of the plaqes from the club. he bought out the old stock from this speed gems co and they had produced a few extras in case new members joined and were in storage for like 50 years. The story and the cars are so simular my fathers 37 ford roadster my uncle still has his 40 coupe from 54 and drives it to this day the modela a with a blown flatty. greta artical and good luck inyour quest.

Thanks for sharing your story.. hearing stuff like that gives me hope that I can find some of the original memorabilia that is out there. My avatar picture is of my dads 40 that was stolen from him back in 64.. Wouldn't I love to find that..but that's another story for another day.

Thank you... I would love to revive the club hoping to get all the members together that I have found for a group picture someday. It's pretty amazing that so many of them are still around.

  6. Side note:

Ricci32 - Here is a picture of the original Masonite/linoleum pattern used to make your father's plaque by Speed Gems. It is one of the 4100 patterns from Speed Gems that we have, o if you find any of your father's old buddies who need a plaque to relive their childhood, let us know.

Nice article, that was my era, too. I grew up in Brockton, about 30 miles from Medford. Jay

This is an excellent story. I am going to shop this link around to a few of the original members in my club, "Pushrods, Waltham, MA". There maybe a good chance some of the guys may know your dad and some history (especially since our club colors are also purple and white and Waltham is very close). Also, a fellow in the Ty-rods, Paul Aldrich, is very well versed on the history of new england clubs of the 50's and 60's.
Look for a PM from me on a few other items as well.

    All the best,
    Pete

What a great story! Nice work on the jacket. Maybe she could do some more entries on what else she found on the Road Rebels!

  16. Like 1929rats said, Paul Aldrich should be your next contact.
Paul initially grew into hotrods while growing up in Wellsley and knows a lot of club history in the Boston to Worcester area.
Cousin Vinny is also the closest to your father and uncle of all the people I know.
Your story Doreen left me with a lump in my throat.

Thanks Jimmy... means a lot to know you liked the story.
I know who Paul Aldrich is.. but I have never talked to him about this stuff.. so I guess I should!

  18. Paul would definitely be the one to talk with;I don't know why I didn't think of it.The last time I saw Paul was at a Ty-Rods Reunion at the Elks Club(probably 10 years ago)and he told me he was compiling information on New England car clubs in the hope of writing a book about it.I think he is still an active member of the Ty-Rods so you could probably get in touch with him through them.

Hope you can find out more about the club;I would be interested as well.

  19. Paul is very approachable.
I met up with him in Rhinebeck last month.
He is a fountain of knowledge that I hope will help you Doreen.
Next time I see Paul I'll plant a seed in his memory bank for you.

  20. Doreen,

    I e-mailed you Paul's contact info.

Hi I am new here and doing research for my husband. I belong to another forum and they directed me here. My father in law used to belong to a car club back in the 1950's also called the road rebels, however they were based out of Brooklyn NY. The only information I have is the car plaque (which I have to find) and that he drove a 1954 Oldsmobile. I went online but came up with nothing involving brooklyn road rebels. If there is anyone on here who could help me I would greatly appreciate it. I would love to talk with a former member or anyone with knowledge of the car club. By the way my husband and I are into car collecting as well. Thanks

My "Hot Rod and Custom Car Clubs" book has the Road Rebels - Brooklyn listed and Dennis O'Brien has the original pattern for their plaque .....

    UPDATE
<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:OfficeDocumentSettings> <o:RelyOnVML/> <o:AllowPNG/> </o:OfficeDocumentSettings> </xml><![endif]--> About 4 months after the story was posted, Rebelette” Diane Romanoff contacted me with some exciting news. A recent get together with some Medford High School girlfriends turned to the subject of The Road Rebels and my search for an original Road Rebel’s jacket. As fate would have it, one of the girls whose(deceased) husband Harry was a club member, still had his jacket and membership card. Excited by the prospect of actually seeing the real thing at last, Diane, myself, and two other “Rebellettes” Helena Enos and Shirley Abbott (wife of member Jack Abbott) planned a “Meeting of the Jackets” at Diane’s home in Billerica.
This would be my first time meeting some of the “Rebellettes,” as the girl friends of club members were called, in person. Previously I had talked to Diane on the phone and through email. As the night of the get together arrived my stomach was knotted with anticipation. I couldn’t believe that I was going to meet more members of the club and that at last my desire to find a real jacket was being fulfilled. When Helena finally arrived, it took all my will power not to rip the bag containing the item out of her hands like an excited 4 year old. After what seemed like an eternity, she took Harry’s jacket out and helped me to put it on. As I slipped my arms into the sleeves, I drew in a deep breath of excitement and in doing so caught the faint aroma of motor oil, cigarette smoke and a little bit of gasoline. Ahh, if this jacket could only talk was my thought.
The original jacket has a patina that no reproduction could ever capture. The purple wool, now faded from its original dark hue, is worn and the cuffs were replaced because Harry had worn it so much over the years. The embroidery on back with the original chenille Road Rebel’s patch is more rudimentary than my new one and the white thread is now yellowed. The original jacket also does not have the NHRA patches that were added later when the club became “official”. The recreated jacket is heavier and the shoulder inserts are white leather while the original jacket is lighter weight wool and the inserts at the shoulder are now yellowed and worn satin. The most impressive part of the old jacket is that it is reversible. Helena wasn’t even aware of this detail, as she had never seen Harry wear it with the satin side out. Here it is in full color, a royal purple satin with white embroidered letters.
We had a wonderful evening as I listened to the “Rebellettes” share stories and I got to know better the people who were my father’s friends back then. I was so touched by the fact that even after all these years, they still cherish him. They were all impressed with the “new” jacket too and commended me for my hard work and tenacity trying to recreate something entirely from two black and white photos and collective memories. I love my new jacket and the folks at Silva Sportswear for helping me to create this fitting tribute. When the weather is cool and crisp I wear it to all the car shows I can. Helena promised me that when she goes she will make sure Harry’s jacket gets passed on to me but I truly hope that event does not arrive anytime soon. I am simply happy to have finally found an original. It just goes to show you that anything is possible, perseverance pays off and that dreams really can come true.

  27. WOW!!! What a great follow-up! By the way there is going to be a get together at the All Timers Gearhead Gathering on August 19th.A lot of older guys are getting together to renew old friendships and likely as not tell a few war stories. I'm coming out for it;hopefully with my 55 Safari and if you go please come up and sya hello.
