hello, i bought a 66 f100 2wd shorty yesterday. its rust free except very minor rust in the floor pans. its got a 390 big block with holley four barrel from a 65 mercury and a four speed. I was wondering if anyone knows how to tell what the trans came out of or what it is, as neither me or the previous owner knows the model. the reason im asking is im going to have to replace the clutch here pretty soon. the transmission is geared really low, 1st gear 0-5 mph, 2nd 5-15, 3rd is 15-30 and 4th goes from 30 to 70. i cant imagine this transmission going in a mercury so i was thinking it might be the original one that came with the truck. any info would be greatly appreciated. ill post pics soon

Is it a top shift or a side shift? Top speed is determined by your rear end ratio, not the trans. Sounds like a truck trans, though.

From the pictures you provided I'm guessing no And for what it's worth, the rear end governs your 'low speed' and not the gears in the transmission. .

5 mph in first gear sounds like a truck "granny box". If it's huge, and the shifter comes out the top in the middle, that's what it is.

Look for a metal tag attached to one of the housing bolts. It should have some letters/numbers that can ID the unit. Also there will be some casting numbers on the case and on the shift housing.

If it has provision for a PTO, it's for sure a truck box, probably a T-98, as said.

If Reverse is to the left and up it is a T-98. If it is to the left and down it is a New Process 435.

I'm gonna say New Process NP 435. If it's got the granny gear and reverse is to the right and down. Is first sychroed? I had a '67 Dodge d200 with that gearbox and through alot of research I found out Ford and Dodge both used them alot in those years. When I was trying to find another one for my Dodge all I could find were the Ford ones lol. Damn I miss my truck now, good luck with yours!
