Ron, sure was a WILD Loewy style, wasn't it? And people called the Edsel ugly??? This looks like a '50 Champion to me. The Studebaker name was very robust on the bezel surrounding the grille bullet, and this has a split windshield -- which I don't think the Commander had.

  12. Well I'm typically a Ford person but given my 'druthers I'd take this model Stude over any ox-yoke collared Edsel. IMO, the '60 Edsels were least homely of all. . . But we all know what opinions are like, eh?;)

Ron, you sort of raised an issue HAMBers might enjoy. I THINK EVERY CAR GUY OR GAL HAS
A FAVORITE "UGLY DUCKING" ORPHAN CAR HE/SHE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE IN THEIR GARAGE.:p
    AM I RIGHT???

Though I actually LOVE the first-year '58 senior Edsels (and the still-odd '60s are the better investment,
not to mention the Tucker!), MY FAVE ORPHAN (even ahead of the Tucker, even ahead of the Packard
Pregnant Elephant ) would have to the post-war Stude Starlight Coupes! With their bullet nose and
wraparound rear glasses, they just flat-ass looked like something that dropped out of a flying saucer! :D LOL.
They always looked to me as though they could sprout wing, tail fins and take flight! They looked like they were
COMING when they were GOING (or way it the other way around?

ANYBODY ELSE HAVE A FAVORITE ('64 or earlier) UGLING DUCKLING CAR with a vintage pic to show it?

And one of our THEN-&-NOW contrasts! Above, a dusty memory. Below, a RUSTY memory!
Above, thanks to Reservatory6. Below, thanks to hawkeye car guy, FlickR member Rusty59!
Shot near Saugerties in far-eastern NY state.

    I had a ride in a '50 Stude taxicab
....and it was only about 3 months
    ago, too...in Havana Cuba! The
condition of it - like most private
taxis in Cuba, to say the least -
wasn't quite as "pristine" as the
one in your vintage pic, but
    unlike a lot of '40's & 50's-vintage
American cars still in daily - and
    even commercial use:)eek:) there,
it still had it's original flathead-6
    .....albeit, now with a 12-volt
    electrical system and an alternator
    from a Toyota - and a homebrew
carb adapter carved from a scrap
piece of iron and mounting a 2-bbl
    carb from an '80's-something
    Moskovich.

Great picture of the Beyer Motors Desoto Plymouth dealership that was located at 3435 S KINGSHIGHWAY BLVD in St Louis. The building is still there and still used as a car dealership but looks different with modern awnings and windows. The shot of the 58 Desoto Firemite must have been taken at the same time? you can see the street numbers in the window and even the other signs in the window match. I wonder how many more shots there were in the series?
