Default '56 Pontiac 316 Strato-Streak

i gotta 316 with the hyrdamatic attached. i wanted to know how much i should sell it for. the 316 is dead needs a complete rebuild. i drained the fluids and radiator fluid came out along with the oil. the trans was clean. theres no spark plugs wireset distributor hoses belts or power steering reservoir. transmission coud probably use a rebuild since it the gear wouldnt catch once in awhile when i hit the gas from a dead stop due to broken rear motor mounts. but there was no probem with shifting and all the gears worked good p n dr lo r. im keeping the carb and linkage setup to put back on the car since i dont really have the money to shop around for a new set up. i got a quote from a shop called adams metalizing and they said it would be about 3200 due to the age of the motor and that was if it was rebuildable. it was for labor parts and a new paint job. i tried to get it without a paint job become ithey said it comes with it. load of shit if you ask me. anyways its pulled and ready for pick up and some help at what to price it at would be nice.

It really depends on how bad the 316 is. If it is rebuildable and stock size bores, then it might be worth a couple of hundred dollars. The Stratoflight hydramatic (Jetaway) could be worth $50. I bought a complete 287 and dual range hydramatic for $300 a few years ago, but they were running. Hope this helps. Put an add in the HAMB classifieds and see what interest you get.

$3200 sounds a bit high, but then it might OK for LA-LA land. You would be well served to shop around, even if you have to haul it 100 miles...
If your thinking about swapping in a different engine consider that the stock engine fits and everything hooks up. No issues with frabicating odd mounts or having to move 'this part' so 'that part' will fit. If 'ya gotta swap for something I believe that most Pontiac engines up through 59 will work.
The 317 is a pretty good engine to start with and a basic hot-rod rebuild will make a respectable performer.
