Reminds me of when the planes used to make emergency landings at York US30, but they were never the 4 engine types. Stop the races...here comes Sky King!!!

Would be neat to know the story behind that "match race". I remember "Super Snoopy" flying at the Reno Air Races (no kidding) about 25 years ago. Scared the hell out of some of the warbird guys racing with that monster.

When I was a kid, was like 13 I was at the Lebanon MO airport and there was a drag race between an '54 Thunderbird a Cessna 310 (old one like Sky King's). The T-bird smoked it at the get go but by the time they were down the runway that 310 came roarin' by the T-bird. What a cool thing for a 13 year old ..

Yes, I posted it first, that's a copy of my scan from the 1971 Air Progress magazine that is in my collection of air racing magazines.
The DC-7 belonged to airline captain Clay Lacy and his business partner Allen Paulsen and they raced it at the 1970 California 1000-mile air race held at Mojave. This photo was taken at the 1971 San Diego Cup air race where the DC-7 and a Lockheed Super Constellation flown by Herman "Fish" Salmon were not allowed to race after a protest was filed by the WWII fighter participants. Lacy and Paulsen did fly demonstration laps as well as this "race" with the TFD. By the way, the "Super Snoopy" DC-7 placed 6th at the Mojave event, flying the race non-stop, which is why Lacy and Paulsen chose the DC-7 for the 1000-mile race. |

I would hate to be the racer and get caught in the wake turbulence of the aircraft! Talk about a hairy ride that would be!
