Curves of Steel, organized by Phoenix Art Museum, is the first exhibition in an art museum to explore the impact and influence of streamlining on American and European automobile design in the 20th century. It features 22 of some of the rarest and most stunning cars ever to be presented in one show – many are the only existing examples of their kind.

Thanks for posting. Thats in my turf, guess I will go look.

  7. Went to it already and all I can say is DAMMMMMMMMMMM. the cars there will blow you away. the Delahye 165 is by far the most streamlined car I have ever seen in person next to the so cal belly tank car which is also there. I got kicked out of the show at closing time and was the last to leave one night. All the AZ people you MUST go this show. The ideas that I got to transfer to hot rods is endless and I am going back again with a pad an pen to write down all the ideas since no photos are aloud. the book you can pre order which is 75.00 but I think its totally worth it. the staff who wrote the little stories under each car all agreed that the so cal belly tank car was the most truest form of streamling. HAHA another one for the hot rod crowed.

Great show, but, as mentioned, no photos. No touching the pedestals that the cars rest on either. BostonMike and myself were trying to look under some of these gorgeous cars and were politely asked not to touch the bases. Oh well. So many cool ideas to utilize. The '36 Scarab in the lobby was definitely one of my favorites, fully independent suspension, the scarab-esque louvers on the nose, the interior detailing, dang man, for such an odd-ball vehicle it had style in spades.
BostonMike just about got his hand whacked for touching Bruce Meyer's Ferrari Testa Rossa. There was a car called the Tatra a '48, and it was probably the strangest car there. The Delahayes, A Bugatti, couple'a Talbot Lagos oh my!

For a list of the cars....and some pics

$75? Anyone know whether it's hardback? Anyone going that's willing to pick us up a copy and ship it overseas...!?!

  14. Ah - answered my own question - it's hard cover, and it looks like they'll ship overseas...

  16. Does anyone know if this exhibit will travel to other cities. It should be a great draw for any of the other great national museums.

"1937 Delahaye 145 “Million Franc Prize” car"... This car showed up at my job this March, and luckily I got some pics of it and a Bugatti:

I begged and pleaded with the guy driving the truck to take me for a spin in the Delahaye, but he wouldn't budge. Even after I offered him a ride in the Packard, he still wouldn't do it! Oh well, at least I got pics!

  20. Some of those I've seen at Pebble Beach, looks like a way cool exhibit.

The 1937 Delahaye 145 was RACING at the Monterey Historic's at Laguna Seca last year as well!! And its rarer than rare...

  25. I guess we're pretty lucky to have a few of those Tatra's around here. Kinda like a 4dr VW bug being humped by a dolphin.

I made a post about this and just found the real thred:

Glad to see Ryan put up a bit about this fantastic exhibit. I happened to check it out on a "First Friday" of the month, where all exhibits are free at the Art Museum on that day (as well as other various art happenings downtown). It is breathtaking. I knew about some of the cars and learned about the way American designs were looking at what Europe was offering. The Lincoln Zephyr they had there is a great example of that. If you check it out on a "First Friday" you do not have to pay admision, but take notice of the special times where you can go and get a full lecture on the cars when they have a specialist there.

    Tatras......

Don't ever spin one. They have a single chain to drive all four cams. Buddy of mine spun his and didn't get the clutch in. Bent every single valve

Tatra made a prototype snow cat.... really neat

Yeah, I was just talking about this show a few weeks ago with Jerry at the drags... I've been having some fun with aero-mods at work and our director is paying for a few of us to attend the exhibit this weekend. Nice, as I would've been there either way.
    I like swoopy cars...
...and what's this about no pictures?

The blue '37 Delahaye looks like it's about to attend a lawn show complete with folding chair and cleaning supplies.:D

As I looked at those beautiful cars I couldn't help but think how they'd look with some altitude adjustments. Is that wrong?
