I've never seen a picture of you so I have no idea what you look like Ryan, I want to meet you. I'll be the dark chubby one in a Rumblers shirt. I heard you're Caucasian, I'll find you.

Ryan your coupe is cool, but there is nothing like brute power to put a smile on your face... Its a great way to relieve stress and frustration after a rough day....

I spent the weekend circling two 51 fords. Mine I've had for 13 years and my freinds he's had for about a year. I have driven mine through about 16 states, and my buddies hasn't been around the block since 1980. Mine ate another engine, his is a 59k mile car. I look at his car and wish mine was as nice. I look back and 13 years ago, it was. His doors open and shut as if they are new, mine used to. I can totally see what you are saying about the 38 not seeming so nice, but two things: 1) that car rocks!, and 2) you still have it! That is all I need to say. Crash.

I have drooled over that coupe for a while now. It was one of the first pics I saw when I found the HAMB and JJ. I was in love with it as well It is just a perfect example of a perfect rod. It doesn't matter about its short comings or pit falls, or little things you know about it, It is part of your heart and soul and will ALWAYS BE. As said earlier, Hot Rods are never finished they just evolve. Spend some time on it, and fix those subtle little things that irk you. You will never regret it.

Don't think for a second that anyone who has owned a car for a long time hasn't thought the same thing. Its like any other relationship really. If you are like me, when people give you a compliment on your car, all I can do is point out its flaws....laquer paint's cracking....front ends all chipped up, fit and finish is pretty shabby, etc. etc. yet after 29 years, here she is, still haulin' my fat ass around. I know she's far from perfect, but she's all mine and will be till the day I die........

To me that is a big part of the attraction of traditional rods. When a car has cracks and chips in the paint, and imperfections from being used as it was intended, that is all a part of the cars character. It proves its lived a full life, as we all should. All those imperfections you guys notice are there because you've used your cars as they should be used. Driven, and driven lots. The imperfections are as much an input of your own personality as the modifications you've made to the car to make it your own. To me, they make the car seem more alive!

"Washing one car after the other kind of depressed me. The model-a is pretty much perfect in every way, but the ‘38 is beginning to show it’s age. The paint is still pretty nice, but the bumpers (that took two years to source and cost me a mint relative to my college kid pay check) and some of the bright work is starting to dull, the under carriage isn’t as clean as it once was, and the interior is starting to sag a bit."

Ryan,
awesome story and photo!
I know what you mean about having two dream cars parked in your driveway when you get a new one, the other get's neglected a bit
I got to experience the same thing, but one's gone now.
Have a blast and fun at the round up, wish i could go.

thanks for sharing,
CAB

Wow Skate Fink you just described me!! I'm not getting old, I just got patina!!

I remember a couple of years ago, Reggie got Ryan to drive his '32 5w with the flatty to Roundup. Ryan was on cloud 9. Now he is an old Austin hand, getting someone to drive one of his cars to Roundup.
