Default carb gurus

I have a ford 302/2 bbl with a carb spacer. why do some spacers bores go straight thru(unconnected) and some bores are connected with a balancer slot? on some spacers that slot is completely thru the spacer, connecting the bores and some only half way down from the top. any advantage to either?
