I've been working on this truck for 2 years now. Started as a low budget build, but realized safety is not worth sacrificing!!! ... so slowered the pace as pocket book couldn't keep up with motivation LOL
But anyway here are some pics, hope you enjoy.

more pics of the frame build. Notice the dead perch on the passenger side?... remember the 50's style dirt trackers?... no need for a panhard bar and a much cleaner look!!!

having issue with my trans crossmember, the trans is too low to go straight across the rails. Started fabing 2x4 rectangular tubing and leaving enough gap in the middle to use a removable plate to bolt to in the center. this plate is 2.5"x 13" ,3/16" thick. My question is if this will be strong enough to hold the th400?...Here are some pics. Any advise would be appreciated.

I think it would be strong enough as is. But you could weld a strip of 3/16 x 1 flat bar on edge on both outer edges botom side of the plate forming a chanell or just modify a piece of tubing into a chanell.
I like the direction you are going with this build. I am subscribing to this thread. Keep posting . |

I was originally thinking of using tubing, but have very little ground clearance. I would hate to hit a stray brick in the road.LOL, Maybe thicker plate?

Thicker plate like 3/8 " thick should do it.

Jumped in and fabed a crossmember out of some 3/16 angle iron. welded 2 sides on to a piece that I bent from the flat piece. Had to use the torch to bend the flat section as a hammer was not working well.LOL
The mounting holes were a bit tricky as I am mostly eye balling everything, but once everything was done it went together very nice and clean. I think it will be strong enough. I will be adding some kind of x member to stiffen the frame and that should give it extra strength!

I got a little more done today. Finished some welding. The motor mounts and trans. mount are done. Ran out of day light
Plan to work on the firewall tomarrow. It sucks racing against the coming winter, need to get more welding in before it starts getting cold!

Looks like a real good start. You said you were not going to use a pan hard bar and was wondering how you are going to locate the rearend and how your mounting the rear shocks. Keep up the good work

The rear is a triangulated 4 link, I haven't mounted shocks yet.

I need a little help with my sub frame. Anybody got any suggestions on what kind of tubing to use? I've seen a few pics, but no explanations on best placement and way to attach for a 4" channel. Any help would be great!!!
This is my first build, so I've never done this.

Built mine out of 1x2 tubing on my Ford truck. Strong enough for what I'm concerned.
Check out my build thread for more details: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=313603 You're doing a great job, keep us posted!
