With all the threads on the Hamb, this may have been done before. Here's mine Most Musical are small block V8's wound up around 10K. Most entertaining sounding are the old nitro cacklers. Most impressive sounding are modern top fuel or funny car engines, and special mention goes to the raspy growling sound from the big Ford FE engines. I'm sure yall have many more favorites than these. --- Steve ---

  2. Maybe because it was the hot engine back in my early days but I always liked the sound of a Chevy 283 with a Duntov cam at idle.

Flatheads and Y-blocks with hot cams. The flathead in the Joe Nitti roadster is one of my favorites.

not automotive: but the Pratt & whitney R-985 radial ( 985 cubic inches) 450 H.P. at about only 1,700 R.P.M. with it's 9 cylinders barking away propelling a Beech Staggerwing quickly through the air as it makes a low pass over my rural location, where the airspace above me can still legally be utilized in such a way. Is a true artform for both the sight and sound of it.

I was at a mudbogger meet years ago. I know, I know...but some of those guys run bad-ass engines. Anyway, this one unlimited entry sounded sooooooooo tough! I asked him what the engine was...I thought for sure he'd say a bigblock something. Nope...289 Ford!!!???

2 of my favorite sounding engines have been 289's. One is a Super Stock 65 Mustang, and the other in a mud drag truck. Both not HAMB friendly, but the 289 is.

I thought I knew what a good flathead sounded like until I heard the Khougaz roadster at idle. It's pure sex.

A Chevy 250 with Smitty's the rapping has always been a sweet sound to me. A Chevy 283 with the Smitty's sounds great too. :D

BTW, what we perceive as differences in a 283, 289, or a 279 is a function of the different cams, header diameters, compression ratios, and when revving in neutral rotating weight, each one tended to have.

They all Fire LRRLRLLR, just depends on where you start the sequence. As a matter of fact a 289 and a 283 fire identically, just how they number the cylinders,

Put the same cam (EVO at same piston position, same opening velocity), 10 - 1 compression and 1.625 headers they would sound near identical.

Oops, unless its a Corvette, Thunderbird, or Cobra engine, that's different

Maybe the sound that was commonplace at certain peaks of a lifetime, like Dyno Don's Cammer at 10 Grand on the line, imagine those cam chains!!! Or a flat crank Hemi from S&M

That Ford GAA tank engine. It's two thirds of a 60 degree vee twelve aircraft engine and has a unique sound. I can spend hours on U tube just for the vibes.
