Art & Inspiration *Barris Kustom City - 1/25 scale diorama build thread -***NOW COMPLETE***

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hot-rod dude, Feb 29, 2012.

  1. Hi, my name is Matt. My dad and I started to build a diorama of Barris Kustom City in 1/25 scale. As dad is a signwriter,we used his computer program to help us to get perfect 1/25 scale sizes of the buildings. We scanned photos of the shop and loaded them in to the computer. He then image traced over the top of the photos to get the reference points for the ploter to follow. The computer then plotted the data on to paper and then we tranfered the image with charcoal on to the MDF board. We then cut all the pieces out and assembled it all together.

He i am with some of my models,my latest trend is canted headlights.

Now, lets get on with the build.....

Here is the sample photo that we used to trace and to scale it down 25 times to 1/25. We used a typical door measurement to start from. You can see the faint yellow lines that we have entered into the computer to get the right proportions.

We did all the buildings this way. Here are the screen shots of the finished images.

Next was to plot the images out onto paper in real life 1/25 scale. Here is the plotter working away.

    Here it is!

Next was to charcoal the back of the paper so we can transfer the image onto the M.D.F. 4.5mm board.

Here are the shapes ready for cutting.

Now we cut out all the windows and doors and put in balsa wood door jambs etc. Then putty it all up.

  5. Here are the rest of the buildings all mocked up and in position.

Providing George and Sam have average sized heads, dad used them to scale up the size of the bricks in the wall so we could make a mask for the interior brickwork.

    Here is the mask below.

here is the mask going onto the acrylic primed walls.

    Squeegee it on firmly.

    Peel of the transfer paper.

Mask is now in place ready for the thick gluggy paint to give a textured surface.

Dad showed me the technique to put on the thick paint.

    My turn now.

Gluggy paint gives a good scaled texture. Peeling off the mask before the paint dries.

    There we are, all done.

To be continued. Thanks for your comments! Stay tuned for more soon.

    That is an awesome project!
You might have to scale back the size of the bricks slightly though, if you assumed George's head was normal sized. Everybody knows George has always had a big head (sorry, I simply couln't resist that).... :D

No flames. Red bar at the top of the page underneath the post reply button, find "thread tools", click the little triangle next to it and in the pulldown tab that will appear click on the bottom box "subscribe to this thread" and when prompted just click on the yes button when it asks if you really want to subscribe to the thread. Next time you log in go to "manage my account" and when you click on it it will show you any threads that you have subscribed to with fresh posts on.
    Good luck
