The latest issue of Motorcycle Classics magazine has an article about a guy who bought a 1934 Harley VLD in 1938, and he still owns and rides it today at the age of 90. It's a pretty cool story.

It's a very cool bike. I just have to wonder, it kinda seems like there are a lot of pre-war motorcycles around with that kind of original finish and wear on them. I'm surprised there are any left that haven't been restored, modified, or just plain pounded to death.

    None made.

    or 80 cubic inch flattie

    1st one is 1935

That's the factory 1933 paint scheme.

Outstanding. '32s came in 45" or 74" twins. Also a single that year as well. That does look like a 74.
Panic: That is a 33 paint scheme however in 32 Harley had special colors & combinations not shown in product literature. In 32 the standard finish for all models was olive green with vermillion striping.

When you say "more affordable than one might first think", what does that mean?

10 gs? A million? That looks like a priceless piece of hardware I would kill to own and wouldn't bother shopping for since whatever they were asking it's a lot more than I could afford to pay.

Wow. That's not half as bad as I suspected. Thanks for the info. Looks like it's just one more thing for me to save up for. Sigh.

Here's mine, 1930 Model D 45 cu in. You can see the engine is smaller than the 32 shown.
Often called the " 3 cylinder Harley " because of the vertical generator.
You can see the generator at the back of the front guard, has plated top, looks like an extra cylinder.
Fun to ride with a foot clutch and hand shift.

painted one of those 32's , a couple years back... it was a olive green color with maroon and gold stripes....kinda cool to actually paint a bike in something other than candys or pearls....:D
