Projects Progress on the Treit and Davenport liner

Target 550 Update 190: Here are some shots of the liner's instrument panel and some of the unusual materials used in finishing it, mainly ivory. This isn't yer normal elephant ivory (which us illegal to possess, buy or sell) but that which comes from a prehistoric mammoth.

And just to top it off, there are a couple of areas that are inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Pretty fancy stuff!

That's a good question. The answer is probably in the previous posts where the tubes and latching mechanisms are described, but I'm up in the night fighting with a recalcitrant computer.

Seems the built-in fan on the Radeon video card has seized and is, as a friend might say, wreaking hate and discontent with the system, including the only BSDs I've ever seen with Windoze 7 Pro. If it's not one thing it's another.

Waitaminit while I do some quick checking. I'll be afk for a minit. I'm baaaack. Did ya miss me?

The tube release mechanism is positively actuated by cables connected to levers in the cockpit. However, in this photo:

http://www.target550.com/gallery/189_getting_ready_for_testing/189_023.jpg, Freud states that he hasn't seen the mechanism for expelling the chutes. And it goes on to say, "Time will tell on that." I guess we'll all have to be somewhat patient until that's revealed.

Yanno, I wish I lived a whole lot closer to Marlo in Oregon or Hume in Washington. Then I could just run over to either location and check things out. But alas, I'm in the USSR (Utah Sovereign State Republic) and only get exit visas for salt flats trips.

You might wanna post this on Landracing to see if Freud knows off the top of his head or found out anything in his trip to Sedro Wooley yesterday. After yesterday, the liner may be back at Marlo's hangar with the exception of the tail assembly which is still having the riveting redone.

Update 192: The parts of the front wheel fairings and their attachments. There's more to the fairings than I was aware of. Doc Freud explains it with his photos and text.

Update 193: This update covers the canopy latch and duct as well as the finalized wheel fairings. Things are getting to the point that there are only minor details to finish up. I hope to be able to announce a re-scheduled testing date in the near future. Cross yer fingers.

Since there are no airlines to the back of the chute tubes it seems to me that

the chutes will be ejected by a spring. There are also no releases built into the

cockpit for air lines. They will probably be spring loaded. There are air activated

cylinders to open the doors on the tubes.

 

2013 is going to be a good year.

 

Target 550 Update 195: Rear wheel fairings from the start to "almost" the end.

This is a big post. It shows how the rear wheel fairings were made in aluminum (formed over a wooden buck) and shaped to be used as molds for the carbon fiber fairings that are being made by Frank Martinez. The amount of work that went into these fairings is unbelievable.

Freud has put a lotta photos together that tells the story from the beginning up to the point where they were sent off to Frank. Enjoy the craftsmanship that went into this part of the project.

It shows a lotta work being done on the rivets on the tail...a LOT of work.

Then there's big progress to report from Freud's visit to Marlo's shop in Oregon. Even though it's December, the preparation to get the liner ready to make its test runs is still going at full speed. This post is the first of several that will show what's going on. In this one, the mounting of the blowers is taking place. That required some fabrication and another Target 550-built special tool.

Stay tuned, cuz things are ramping up pretty quick. I may even take a trip to the Great Northwest in a few days myself. Not positive on that one, but it's a definite possibility.

 

Target 550 Update 198: I should have posted this earlier today, but life got in the way. One of the things that had to be done as part of getting the T-550 streamliner ready to run was fabricating mounting plates for the blowers. Huge blowers. Les Davenport is shown making all of this work.

Since the blowers are rotated 90 degrees from the "normal" orientation, some method of draining any fuel left in 'em had to be created. A part of this post shows the fittings for the drains.

I keep saying this, but it's getting ever so close...I'm chewing on my fingernails, waiting to hear that they're ready to fire the motors and make a test run on a paved surface somewhere. As soon as I hear that, I'm on my way!

Here's a shot of the gears on the ends of the rotary vanes. Did I mention that these blowers are huge?

Target 550 Update 199: Installing the coated blowers into the liner. One of the photo's caption mentions that although the blower cases are magnesium, they still weigh about 150 pounds each. Installing them was a bit of a challenge, not only because of weight, but because they're a tight fit. But the T-550 crew was up to the task and now they're in.

The photos show how special bolts/guide pins were made and how they had to wrestle 'em into place.

Target 550 Update 201: Yep. Another update. This one shows the fuel injectors being flow-tested and installed as well as the EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) probes that required a little bit of modification before installation. Just more stuff that has to be done before the liner takes a shot at the record.

Target 550 Update 202: Guess what? Yeah, you got it. Another update. This one shows Bob Harris installing the ignition wiring and Marlo Treit installing the fuel system. These were shot just before firing up the liner's motors for the very first time.

I really enjoy chraftsmen at work and lsr is the purest form of racing left as there is no $ to win. I wanted to lsr so bad but it wasnt god's will for me and i had to let it go and just watch.

That's a quote from Glenn Freudenberger. I'm sure not a video producer, but I got a couple of video files that were shot with an iPad and stitched 'em together with little bit of explanatory text and credits.

Target 550 Post 205: Final fit and finish of the last tail section.

That darned tail skin piece is finally getting re-riveted with measures taken to prevent dimpling in the skin's surface. I'm sure that Hume will be overjoyed to put that one on the "finished" list.

Freud has asked me to post something about the Bonneville NorthWest Reunion that he hosts every year:

It'll be Friday, Feb 15 & Saturday, Feb 16 at the Shilo Inn Portland Airport in Portland, Or.

This year, Marlo Treit will have a "presentation/discussion" (I spose it could turn into a bs session) on Friday nite and then on Saturday mid-day, he'll open up his hangar for a guided tour of the Target 550 streamliner.

Then that evening, the after-dinner speakers will be Betty and Tom Burkland. For those who don't know, Tom owns the FIA flying mile record for piston-engined, wheel-driven cars at 415.896 mph, set in 2008.



Betty (Tom's mom) and Tom will be trying to cram 40 years of LSR into a coupla hours. Tom's asked that if there's anything that hasn't been discussed recently or written about that people would like to hear, please let him know.
