Anyone suggest a suitable trans I can use that won't be too much work?

A 904 torqueflite will handle your flattie just fine, there is an adaptor already out there for it. Maybe go with an early 518 overdrive......

  4. who makes the tranny adapter for the flattie six..... just currious? still got the one out of my 50.

I'm curious as well. The transmission in my 50 Coronet is making clunking noises.

You should be able to use a '54 thru '59 Mopar 6 cyl Powerflite..........'54 is when they were introduced and '59 was the last US production pass car flathead 6.

Not that they are easily found, but surely there are some out there. If you do decide to spend for an adapter to a later model trans, also check with Bendtsens www.transmissionadapters.com. Not cheap, but very well made.

I think you should go with an adapter.

Spend the money now. It will be a much more enjoyable car with a good shifting, reliable tranny behind it. Thanks. Don

    Thanks Frankie and George.
Yes, I can adapt the A904/A500 as well as later Mopar manual boxes to the flat 6 and 8. I am way behind on getting details on to the web site so if you have questions send a PM.

  14. if you can find an adapter plate, I would run an a500, there not electronic, just have an electric operated torque converter lock up and 4th gear operation, which is easy to control with 2 switches inside the car, and with the exception of an extra gear they are no different then a 904.

54-55 P'flites had typical column linkage, but 56-59 were pushbuttons. Don't recall if Plymouth used cast iron t'flites with 230 6 cyl flatties, but if they did, u could also go that route. I would think the biggest issue in using a modern transmission and an adapter plate would be starter issues. If the transmission is for a V engine then how the 6 cylinder back of block could have interference issues, unless the starter on these adapter plates are mounted below bottom of block.

Recall that on a Mopar the starter mounts to the bell.

Given a decent transmission with overdrive. And everything else stock. Could the 100 ish hp get me to 70 mph without struggling?

Plenty of conversation on this subject over at www.p15-d24.com and many comments as to the hp vs speed vs rear gear ratio.
The t5 has been done many times but some folks balk at the price of the 'kits'. No, I do not make/sell them.
Be sure to check this swap: http://p15-d24.com/topic/17737-5-speed-not-t5/

    I'm
    Interested in your adapter.
I have a 55 truck with flat head 6 and 3 on the tree. I want an automatic.
Do you install or do the conversion?

Seven years later and Yes, I still make the L6 to TF adapter.
And No, I'm well past the point of working on customer's cars.
Visit my website for adapter details or send an email.
