What's your flavor: The '39 or the '40 DeLuxe?

A little surprised by the number of 39 votes, but mine is 40 Dlx all the way. Have wanted one from the age of 3. Now have one and couldn't be happier.

Funny, as a kid growing up (born '75) reading HRM, I wouldn't even know 39's existed. It seemed fat fender 40's painted teal or pink or cheeze-whiz-orange were the only one of the two years that were featured.

But since you asked, for me the 39 just edges out the 40.

  3. I love the '39 Tudor... except for the giant refrigerator door handle on the deck lid. Easy enough to fix though, I suppose.

If I were shopping for a near-stock vehicle, I'd buy a '40 Standard coupe or tudor. But I think several Deluxe upgrades would be in order: Headlights, 2 taillights, instrument cluster and a chrome grille.

I've never owned a '39 but have owned 3-1940's (one standard, two deluxes).
There are parts and features on all the above that I like and dislike. Overall, I end up liking 40 deluxes the best. That being said, I really like the floor shift and gauges of the '39.
I guess it mainly depends on the individual car though.

I'd also go with the 1940 standard coupe. IMO it's the best of both the '39 & '40 designs.

    39's are really cool.
    40's are really cool.
    Hmmmm, tough ask.
Give me one of each for about 20 years and I'll tell ya.

'39, not "hands down" so to speak, but definitely still a '39. Wouldn't say no to a '40 dash though!

'39 for all of the same reasons the OP gave. They are a class act!

I love the '40 Standard. Has the cool 40-look headlights but the simpler 39-look grille.

I didn't, but someone, somewhere down the line did... my '39 has the grille, hood, left front fender, door handles and all the side trim from a '40 DeLuxe. I was told it was done in the late 60's.

Thats like asking if I like apple or peach pie. The answer is yes. Both cars are classic and beautiful in so many ways. I couldn't choose on a coupe or a ragtop but in a sedan, maybe the slight edge would go to the 40 deluxe.

I started my '40 phantom convertible project by buying an incomplete '40 Std coupe. I copped out on the grille, and used a faux '40 Merc grille rather than either '40 Ford Std or Dlx grilles, although the softer '40 Std hood was retained. '39 stainless side trim was used, raised slightly on the body. '40 Dlx dash, but with '40 Std instrument cluster and Plymouth speedo. I think '39 Dlx, '40 Std and Dlx are all neat cars, but it was fun to pick my favorite pieces of each to include on my car.

Absolutely gorgeous car... Is the body sectioned? It looks very sleek!

It's channeled 2.5". The bottom of the body was cut off, the hood and quarters sectioned, and the fenders moved up on the body, all by the same amount.

Got my 40 standard coupe which I like very much. My first Hot Rod 50 + years ago was a 39 deluxe coupe with a nail head.

Its hard for me to pick one when it comes to 39 and 40 Deluxe coupes, I have both but if I had to chose between them it would be the 40, I've owned this car nearly 50 years and it will be till death do us part.
I don't like the 40 standard grille unless it is all chrome or all painted, the center chrome where it meets the hood, looks unfinished and should continue up the hood like the 41 pickup, the waterfall on that hood just completes the grille center.

  27. I am a 40 guy so I would pick the 40 but a 40 Standard …….
