I love looking through the 1950s issues of Hot Rod magazine for obvious reasons, showing us exactly how hot rods were built, how the trends and parts changed year by year, and seeing the evolution of the custom car as well. One of my favorite things t...

To read the rest of this blog entry from The Jalopy Journal, click here.
Wow.!.hard to choose only one....I'd go for the 30 FORD Coupe in show condition! (but the 47 also grabs my attention) / primerkid
uh oh maybe get a hold of the FORD FUTURA before it was made into the BATMOBILE ....Now that would have changed things
I often go dreaming thru those ancient classifieds and choose my new car. Hey, dreamin ain't a bad thing. ~sololobo~
Of course those prices seem like giveaway in today's world.......but i used to pass on $750 and $1200 cars back in those days as I didn't have that much money to spend. Fun to read those ads today and dream....... I still have a few of those little books I saved.
i remender when i was 16 yrs old,me and my dad went to look at 40 ford cpe with a sbc,the guy told my dad 500 bucks,my dad tells the guy,"your out of your mind" that was 1959,i wanted it bad,but the old man said no,it to much money.....lol
My father told me when he was young he worked for 35 cents an hour. So inflation sucks and its going to keep getting worse.
I would have to be two cars,,, the 40 woody to tow the Larson Cummings roadster,, And yes for this old/not so old guy, my first 'real' job, in 1969, I was paid a whole $1.10 an hour. And I couldn't afford the $500.00 57 Chevy hardtop my brother wanted to sell.

Holy conundrums Batman! What would we do without the caped crusaders trusty Batmobile just the way it should be? George started with the perfect basis to create one of the most important vehicles of all time (perhaps a little over-stating things, but hey, who cares?). Mind you, any of the GM showcar Firebirds might have been an option. Hmmmm, now you've got me thinking about a new thread.........!!!!!!!!!!
Im with JJ on the black Deuce 5w.. But that 36 roadster for $795 also gets me.. Just needs chopped! So who's working on the time machine?
In 1957, I earned $275/month; my apartment cost $75/month, so these cars were well out of my reach! By 1961 I was up to $600/month; in late '61 I got a '62 Corvette, 360 HP, four speed, big brakes etc. There was no reason to be practical, yet, but that all changed two years later.
I'm intrigued by the car for sale (by the same owner) above this one - apparently a station wagon with TV and wet bar, wire wheels, Cibie headlights and wood paneling - can we get a scan of the rest of the ad?
I found a old classifieds book from 1977 in my 63 Catalina when I bought it and in that book there were 63 split window corvettes from 2700 to 3500. Unbelievable. I'll see if I can get the pics up of the adds. 69 hemi super bees for 1800 too!
If you took $2000 in 2012 dollars back to 1958, you could probably buy two, maybe three of those cars. $2000 in todays dollars would equal about $250 in 1958 dollars. Fun to dream isn't it? The woody would be my choice.
I'm still amazed that my Dad once sold a Model A Roadster for $7.00. Not sure of the year this transaction took place.
easy choice for me, you have the ad right there...the dick patterson model A coupe for $2000 obo. I'll take that http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58956&highlight=dick+patterson
Its 1967 and Im 16 and my dad will not let me buy a rusty but running 57 Chev CONVERTIBLE for 150 bucks! Dam! So I saved more money and bought a 56 Cadillac for 350.Loved that car but sold it. Took me 40 yr to get another.I would buy that 40 coupe in the pic-still my fav after all these years.
No doubt it would be the 40 Ford Woodie. But if I had $2000 then I could pick up the 47 Ford Custom as well. Nice to dream isn't it!
I love those old ads. I was way too young then and too broke now. I distinctly remember a 64 Aston Martin somebody put,(hacked) a 327 into and wanted $450.00 for. Dad said no way. The hood would be worth more than that today, even if you burned it. Also a 64 Linclon that Cary Grant bought for Dyan Cannon with papers to verify. $1400.00 was too much for that too. 1974.
Hell I even miss when you could open the classifieds to the parts section and it was 2 or 3 columns long. It was full of GOOD parts for cheap wether it was the local paper or something national. Now if you look at the classifieds in the local paper its just a couple of ads for late model diesel engines from the wrecking yard. /sigh
