Let's see your old license plates & toppers

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by RetroSteel, Jan 2, 2011.

  1. Picked up a 1927 British Columbia plate and an old Standard Oil license plate topper recently on E-Bay.
Correct me if i'am wrong, but from the little research i have done, it seems the Standard Oil topper was given to customers to try out the "new" leaded version of their gas. Lead was not in gasolene originally and Standard Oil wanted to see how it would perform in everyday use. The Topper has a registration number stamped into it to register that topper to a certain customers car.
I'am guessing late 1920's this test was conducted?
If anybody has more info on this i would be interested to know.

Here's my California Black Plate for my California '57 Dodge D500...

It's an Original Plate, and I was lucky enough to get one that had my "JK" initials in it. (See the Dodge in my Album Section.)

Damn I would love one of those old NJ ones for my 31coupe! I never see NJ themed toppers around.

  16. Not that old, but you have to be old to own one!

    A gennie that I paid 15 bucks for...yeah it was a while ago.:D

A reproduction that I painted. Originals just cost too much for my wallet.

A new topper that never existed back in the day but it looks cool.

I hate to show this one because it always starts a "I want one" todo. It is my favorite and only 5 exist in the world...And I have one!!! nah nah nah!:D just kidding! It is my favorite for obvious reasons. No there will be no more made. That was the agreement when we bought ours. sorry but that was the deal.

  24. Doesn't that count as a bottomer?

I'll have to go snag a pic when it warms up a bit.

Unrestored Kansas Tag and repop cast from original topper. Maybe some of you older midwesterners will recognize the topper.

I think there were only two made of the one I've got. :p WhizzerRick made them. Gotta be at least 5 or 6 years old. Can't remember exactly. He was one talented dude. Wish he'd hang out here more.
