What are the shift patterns for the Muncie & Saginaw 4-speed transmissions? Do both have reverse in different positions from one another? I.e: 1 3 |-|-| 2 4 R Thanks.
Duh, I must have screwed up my linkage on my Saginaw...my reverse is left & down. It works fine & feels natural, so I guess I'll leave it like that.
That's interesting. My Saginaw is a Model 441, but I really don't know what year it is. I know it's a car trans, because of the gearing. I had a helluva time trying to find a gear shift knob with the correct (or would it be "incorrect") pattern. It feels real comfortable to pull the thing left & towards me.
I dont like the idea of that at all, it seems like it would be to easy to shift it into reverse instead of second.
My reverse lever is upside down on my Muncie for clearance reasons. It's left and back. No issues what-so-ever with second gear. Works for me.
DID YOU FIND A WHITE SHIFT KNOB WITH THE PATTERN LEFT AND BACK? IF SO WHERE WOULD I GET ONE? SEEMS EASIER THAN CHANGING THE LI NKAGE. THANKS
I have one in my T and it is left and down. Does anybody know of an offset shifter? The shifter is too far to the drivers side and will be a pain. in my leg.
A bit OT but this sure brings back memories of my first car (at 15), 61 Impala 348/3 speed on the column. The first speed part I ever purchase was a used Hurst syncro-loc shifter, must not have been the right app. because there was no room to install the trans. levers correctly. Never did figure out what it was meant to fit on. As a big hole had already been cut out and not having the $$$$ to buy the correct one (new) I just mounted the levers pointing down and went with it, worked OK, but just never could get use to it. You never forget your first one though!
Hurst has one part number #5384084 .I have one in my 33 Plymouth coupe. I have seen them at swap meets also, moves it over a good 2 inches, if you need to know for sure I could measure it. There is one on e-bay it shows it goes over 3.90, 15 tall, and 5.5 back.
Thanks for the stock numbers and if you could give me the amount it actually moves it over it sure would be appreciated...
About the lever being upside down,I had a top loader that when I switched to a Hurst shifter reverse was forward.before that it was back
If you log on to e-bay, hurst shifter handle #5384084 click on the shifter and it has a picture with specs.
has anyone found where I could purchase an off white shifter knob? I would take it to a trophy shop and have the shift pattern engraved with the R left and back for the Saginaw 4 speed with this pattern
If you go to the Hurst website they have a diagram that shows all of the shifter handles with the specs you need. HTH, Dennis D Whoops! should have read further down the thread.....
Just go with it and consider it an added theft deterrent . You and whomever drives the car will know where reverse is so why bother etching the pattern on the shift knob? If you're concerned about hitting reverse instead of second, you can get a Hurst handle with the cable actuated reverse lock out...
