was wondering about the history of the bellflower tips, i have a 58 chevy brookwood wagon,348, points, generator with pwr steering on the back of the generator. anyways i really like the bellflower tips but wanted to know more history on the subject...
same here....anyone out there? i know its a mid-60's thing. i know its popular on early lowriders. often when matched with a set of astros and a nice lowered suspension it can set a car off. where did they come from? i dunno. when did they first get used? i dunno. anyone out there share a little history?
first they were made from 36 ford driveshaft tubes,I first seen the current one's at collins muff and gene's muff in bellflower,ca.
night prowlers has them. i picked up a set for a 65 catalina that i built a few months ago, they also have smithy's mufflers in stock. just picked up a set today fo rmy wagon, that will also be getting bellflowers real soon.
back in the mid to late 60's early 70's bellflower blvd was main cruise,as was whitter blvd an many others within 10 mins drive from each other.Genes muff, collins muff,Larry Watson ,the service center ,reath automotive and others i can't remember all within a 5 mile radius. If you wanted to race no problem,If you wanted to cruise no problem . 50's 60's chevys, fords, pont, buicks, olds, cads, riviera. If your (short) was any kind of cool you had bellflowers & supremes,Genes muff, collins muff were kept busy ,54 chevy's 58 chevys impalas, all of em,dropped on the ground w/ supremes, pinner whites and some pretty kick ass panel&lace paint .As I remember the supremes had a problem shearing studs because of the thinness of the centers.I had a 56 chevy 210 w/built sb 4sp american racing 5spokes,had it lowered for a while with deep chrome reversed w/ 63 belair dog dish polished, could'nt keep rear leaf springs under it had to build suspensionto handle motor an trans. The bellflowers come in different lenghts to flow from back of wheel well to back bumper right along bottom edge of fender .they dont scrape when your drag'in. I don't think I've seen a car they did'nt look good on .Those were some bitch'in days
It's been a while since anyone posted here, but i have yet to see a thread with many pics! I just got mine done today and i love the back rap i get when i let off the gas...definitely no need for a stereo when i can hear that popcorn poppin!
Was there any reason for them other than novelty? Were they supposed to serve any function, or do anything better than regular exhaust pipes?
Bellflowers originated in Bellflower Ca. in the early sixties with the lowriders because they wouldn't high center like regular lake pipes. pride63, they mount just like lake pipes. As stated above, they look great on just about anything.
You can use chrome exhaust clamps (pictured) or weld some flat stock to the inner bottom and bolt to the frame/body. Using flat stock makes for a much cleaner looking install.
i've had them on my wagon for 2 yrs now. no one down here knew what they were . i think i got mine from speedway
Hey, The Bellflower design permits custom fabrication of the inlet pipe.i like the pic that you have posted.i also have same car that you have posted....

Mine are tucked closer in and they extend out flush with the end of the bumper. Our rego laws are really tough tho.
