What years did Ford make the 16x5 steel wheels for the trucks? I want to say mid to late '40's - mid '50's? F-1? F-100?... I'm looking for a nice pair for my '32 truck with the 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern that accept the '40's style hubcap. I had a pair on my coupe and they worked great. *** I need a REALLY NICE, undamaged, straight, perfectly round pair of 16x5, 5 on 5 1/2 Ford steel wheels with REALLY NICE lugnut holes and REALLY NICE valve stem holes, with NO rust pitting... and will pay through the nose to get 2 REALLY NICE ones *** ...did I mention REALLY NICE?
HemiDeuce is right - they also show a 16x4.5 for the trucks from 48-53...best to be buying them with the tire off to be sure. Lawrence
Larry....I'm running '40-'48 Ford wheels on my '27 Roadster Pickup. They accept hub caps that fit inside the hub and are 16 x 5 x 5.5bc....Steve
I remember reading on here that lincoln made a 16x5 wheel in the '40's, but they had special clips to hold the hubcaps on.
Lincoln 16x5's. Looked just like the '40 Ford wheels and used the same style cap mounting. I've been trying to find a good pair for my '32 for a while now.
If you want the nubs on the inside -- essential for `40's era hubcaps -- in a 16" size, with 5 1/2" bolt pattern, then I think you need to be looking `53 and earlier. `54 - `56 had the bolt pattern, but they're gonna be 15" with the nubs on the outside.
Did you check this thread out yet? ---> http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=115542&highlight=ford+wheel+tech Not sure if it's in there or not, don't have time to look right now.
I heard that the early '50s Lincoln versions had no hubcap nubs, because Lincolns were already using full wheel covers.
I am running a pair of early Lincoln 16 x 5 x 5.5 on the rear of my Deuce, Larry........and they have the *inside nubs*........using '40 DeLuxe hud cats on 'em....... Have an extra pair but they are nicer than the ones I am running........plan to use them in the future.....sorry..... CB
......Vito and Rocco stopped by while I was having some pasta and gravy for supper.......I invited them in to dine with me.......they declined......something about me not being worth the powder to blow me to hell......then they went out to my shed and *borrowed* my Lincoln wheels for *a while*..........they had bulges in their pinstriped suits......and I don't think they were new hankies........ Am I in trouble? CB
"3windowLarry - where is it that you found this info?" my BIG Ford truck book and the old Hollanders...plus some brain threw in for not...the prewar Lincolns are correct for early caps up to 1948 Ford car - the post war Lincolns have the outside nub - 5 on 5 1/2 and the new 15" wheel and a cap that some early rodders like to use...can post pics tomatoe... <!-- / message -->
And according to the Ford truck big book - 16x4.5 - 1948 up, 15x5.5 and 16x5 were from 1953 to 1963. This would be the wheel that takes the caps on the inside which trucks did thru 1964...
Larry, here's some pics of 46-48 Lincoln wheels and caps that have the clips and are 15...I think you were wanting the 16 wheels...so these are for reference as another rodder choice...also included is the later Merc caps that go over the outer nubs...think you ccould still find later 16 truck wheels with the outer as they were the option later on 1956 up....
Thank you Stillrunners. I just bought some really nice 16x4.5's from a hamb'r for the front of my deuce...am still looking for really nice 16x5's for the rear...anybody?
DRuss32/Dave, just not seeing it as listed or part # but the book does cut off at 1963. Just seems like I've seen them on service trucks and not the two piece kind. Guess that's what I need to be finding next!!!
Not sure if I'm spelling this right, contact Acker Wheel in San Jose there now online, they closed there shop around the corner from me, bought a few of them from them. Or the Wheel Kid should have some used ones. ~S
Larry for what it's worth I'm not sure it's even worth worrying about going with the 5" wide rims over the 4 1/2, I have the 5's and I don't see that much of a noticeable difference. Even on front wheels I have 3 1/2 fronts but the mainly it's the offset that is different so you end up seeing more of the brake drum then you do that much of a narrower tire. I'm happy with most of our stuff just using 4 1/2 on the rear and a 4 on the front. what size are you going for on the tires? I just tried 5.50 on the front vs a 6.00 and liked it, usually run 6.00 front and 7.00 rear.
Sixcarb...I'm going to run 7.50's on the back with the 16x5 wheel. I like the way it looks even though it's only a 1/2" wider...I'm anal, I know. I just posted an ad in the Wanted section for a pair of REALLY NICE 16x5 Ford wheels...anybody got some..will pay top dollar for the good ones. Larry
Ford offered 16" truck wheels with the 5 1/2" bolt pattern up into the 60s that take the 48 Ford style hub caps as an option. They are rare and hard to find but they are out there. I talked with a guy that restored his fathers early 60s 60-61? (not certain of the year) Ford P/U that his father ordered with 16" wheels. Everyone tries to tell him he has the wrong wheels and hub caps on it but he knows better. I can't guarantee that they were 5" wide but I suspect that they are. Just a continuation of the earlier 16" truck rim. If you find some old Ford trucks from the early 60s check the tire size. They could be 16"ers and take the 48 style cap.
I had bought a set of 4 16x4.5 wheels a while ago and recently dismounted the 50 year old tires, only to find out one had a lot of rust around the valve stem. I started looking on craigslist and found a guy parting out a 41 Ford, with 16 inch wheels for sale. So I bought those, when I got home and measured them they were the 16x5. Two are good , two are not so good. Out of 8 wheels I have 4 that will work. My point to this long story is this guy said these were stock on the 41 Ford car ( unsure if it was a sedan or coupe ) .
