Yesterday, I failed to mention a particular pleasure at Tardel's. It seems there was a large air race in Reno over the weekend and as luck would have it, many partici...

To read the rest of this blog entry from The Jalopy Journal, click here.
You are one lucky son of a bitch! I would trade my hairy left nut for the time that you are havin on the ranch. When you start bottlin that stuff put me at the top of the list for a gallon........na what the hell make it 2!
RC from the pics, that garage is insane. Reminds me of this old guy Jimmie Davis' place here in Austin. He has since passed, but that's where we got all our NOS stuff for all the early motors, brakes, clutches, etc, ect. Could easily build multiple cars w/ the stuff on the shelves. It went forever and he knew where ever part was located. He'd go back in the bowels of that garage w/ a flashlight that barely worked and come back w/ your part in the original box. And it was all in his garage next to his house in S. Austin. Man I miss him. The ranch looks amazing and I have heard the stories, so now I believe it from the looks. Oh, I wish I was there. Tell Vern and Keith howdy and keep writing so I have something to drool over each night before I go to bed...........BTW, Franco is now an official Austin resident......arrived last night w/ everything. The Bug is in town !!!
Hey Ryan Why not go nuts with the camera there for an hour or so, and make a laaaaarge photo post for us to look at. I have some pics saved from Verns place off of earlier HAMB posts and they are nice to drool over. All the cool stuff hanging all over. Paul
that sure is a nice looking '32!! (any more pics of it???) sounds like your having alot of fun! thanks for posting your adventure Zach
Wheres the video you computer guru!!! i want to hear this crisp running flattie. I've been to air races in Reno before and the roar of those planes in very distracting. Cool day. Again better than the headache I had at my job. When does the Tardel bottled hot rod euphoria come out? Jon
Ryan--an idea based on your old "two ammo cans" posting: Take a picture of Vern's '32 roadster traveling tool and subsistence kit! This was covered once loong ago in the old American Rodder (in Bishop days...) and I think it would interest a lot of people here!
Oh...did you see the Twilight Zone episode about the guy who wandered off into 1952 and never came back??
Wow being taught by the Mr Tardel himself just too cool. I too hope for a day 3,4 etc... I'm not sure on the electric fan, that's not traditional
Dammit continentaljohn! I was going to mention the electric fan... Sounds like heaven on earth, Poobah.
Yeah Ryan, I agree with the rest of these guys. That is an really cool opportunity and YOU are one lucky son of a bitch. I need to find me an educator of sorts to teach me the ins and outs in North Carolina. I can't tell you how jealous I am. Keep us updated.
This really is too cool, I have seen this on the Tardel website. But have been too busy to inquire. Anybody else done the Flathead Ranch. I have a new project and am thinking about doing this next year, would love to build my own motor.......
From floor-sweepin'custodian(shop bitch) to engine builder in ONE DAY! You's a pretty smart feller, R. Thanks for sharing--nice stories.
I normally wouldn't post a link on one of Ryan's thread but since you asked........Me, ChevyGirlRox and OldBobSign did the FlatHead Ranch in May. You can read about it here..... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=186778&showall=1
How about suggesting to Vern to start selling those kits (not the tool part) thru his webshop. Also I was looking for the thread that had the kit in it, but I couldn't find it - anyone got the link? Thanks
Another morning at work started with envy! Looking forward to days 3 thru whenever. Maybe someday I'll get out there, looks like a fantastic place.
That's so cool ... coming from an area where the traditional stuff is few and far between, that sounds like an absolutely surreal experience.
I am totally envious. Not only do you get to 'play' with flatheads but you get to do it with prop driven airy-o-planes overhead. Sounds like the perfect spot!
No, no, no.......we're not going to let you get by that EASILY....... P51'...... woopty freaking do! I want to know exactly all the little things Tardel told you....... "Before I put a new piston and rings in, I hone the cylinder....." What did he do to cure the bad bearing......new bearing? turn the crank? That type of stuff..... I have a feeling that Vern is like my grandpa, "You don't need to do all that gawd da*ned machine work to make a flathead run good. Everyone always wants to say how much they spent on machining...." The ball is in your court!
