I was always fascinated with the sketches.... each one is like a little work of art. Must have been a thankless job for the illustrator as they are rarely signed and it was basically considered "throw away art". These aren't stick figures...a lot of it is very detailed and had to have been done by artists that were also mechanically inclined as they are very accurate. There had to be significant time invested in each. Most folks, especially those without an appreciation for such things, just simply glanced at the illustration for a second or two and then moved on.

It would be interesting to hear from some of the talented sketch artists we have here on the HAMB. What would it have been like cranking out illustrations like that one after another for what was probably very modest or even meager wages. How much time would be involved in an illustration like that? Were they all penciled and then inked ?
    Inquiring minds want to know....

Seems it would have been a lot more cost effective in some cases to stage a photo, but I'm glad they didn't...I love that type and style of artwork.

The sketches were always top notch work. There was a stack of those magazines from the early 50's in a hall cupboard in a house we lived in in the late 50's and I just about wore them out reading them.

Good stuff here, i really like the one about the left hand turn signal, kinda funny now that we have signals on every car and no one can be bothered to use them!
I have an old Hot Rod (I think) magazine from the late 80's that has a 10 or 15 page feature full of stuff like this.

this is stuff I used to read as a kid gearhead, I learned how to look at problems and come up with solutions. Some of it isnt the safest but then some were. With all the stuff I used to do on bikes, motorcycles, and cars its a wonder I made it this far!

  23. i am now living with the result of that crib design......resulting failure
thank goodness two other brothers were there to cushion most of the injuries...
