1925 Mochet Velocar...... Before World War I Charles Mochet built small, very light cars. His wife had decided the common bicycle was far too dangerous for their son George, so Charles built him a pedal-driven four-wheeled vehicle of thin plywood. The 4- wheeler indeed reduced the danger of falling over. Nobody had guessed what else it might lead to. The 4-wheeler proved to be exceedingly fast. Little George was delighted with his 'véhicule à propulsion humaine' when he easily left the other kids on bikes behind.

This soon led to a demand for the vehicles and Charles Mochet ultimately decided to give up the building of automobiles in favor of devoting himself to the construction of human powered vehicles. He built a two-seated, four-wheeled pedal-car for adults that he called "Velocar". Later a more spacious velocar was produced and many of these were converted to electric or gasoline power during the shortages of WW2.

In 1933, Mochet's experimental two wheeled bodiless velocar - an early recumbent bicycle - shattered existing pedal-powered speed records. The next year the cyclists sanctioning body, UCI, banned recumbents from competition forever.

Let's go camping...... The neatest photo is the one in the center the caption of which is below.

Roland and Mary Conklin of Huntington, N.Y., made house-car travel a family experience. Their bus factory built the Gypsy Van, shown above and then traveled the whole country.

You said a mouthful there !!!! :D By the time I came along though he'd lost all interest in cars as anything but transportation.

There are a lot more but my Sister has the other albums and I haven't been able to scan the other car pics yet.

My grandpa with his 1924 Dodge Brothers. He sold Wearever Aluminum cookware before and after WWII. Note the utensil in his hand.

Hard to say if these ladies are lost, or have had a breakdown. Maybe it was simply a photo op. 1907 Packard model 30, somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

Springfield, Mass. was home to some great vehicle manufacturers including Knox, Stevens-Duryea and Rolls Royce. Here is a great shot of a fire truck built by Knox, and the writeup from the back of the photo.

Here is another Knox, an earlier one that is quite good sized. It was some where in upstate NY.

Twin6......Are PREWWII COLORED and COLORIZED photos and postcards like these great ones OK????

Twin6 has allowed us to post color post cards. THIS MEANS NO POSTCARDS PRODUCED AFTER 1941 WILL BE ALLOWED. NO MODERN PHOTOS OR CARDS...... YOU WILL BE ASKED TO DELETE THEM. Thanks, T-H

Sure - so long as the photos themselves predate WW2, colored or colorized pix and cards are just fine. So far, we've done well sticking to the original intent for the thread. I hope interest and support continues.
