Cutting down on the antifreeze in my Cad. powered 48 Ford to help cooling but worrying about rust. Where do I buy water soluble oil. Do auto supplies sell it under a brand name or do I have to go to a tool supplier.

    Thanks Gary

Cutting oil is water soluble. Check a local machine shop..

I used it for a long time with my flathead.
It seems like it's good for the job,
but it does separate oil/water if you don't drive it alot,
and also it is eats on the rubber hoses.
Mine got really soft after a year or so.

Barr's Leaks contains water soluble oil. You can put in just the oil and leave out the solid material.

  6. I think Tractor Supply carries it.

I buy it at ACE hardware sometimes. Or order it from Airgas.

  8. I have always been told that Solder Seal's Gunk brand radiator anti-rust & water pump lube contained water soluble oil. I've been using it for years. Seems to do a good job for me.

The Zerex Super Protector is great stuff....I have had it in the system of our rock crawler for 8 years and NO rust or scale. From their data sheet:
The Zerex Protector prevents the accumulation of cooling
system deposits and helps lubricate the water pump. The
Zerex Protector is recommended to boost any engine coolants
protection and for those who want to recharge the coolant
corrosion protection but do not want to change the fluid. It
can be used in stored vehicles like collector cars, classics, hot
rods and specialty vehicles, for applications where enhanced
    corrosion protection is a concern.

Once again you guys come through for me. A lot of good info. Now I just have to decide what is best for me.

Keep them coming though if you have anymore ideas.

I don't know if it makes my engine run cooler. But it sure keeps the water jackets and tank, and fittings clean in my Bonneville car. Makes a good coolant for the Bridgeport too.

Good read. A lot to think about. My farmer father had me use corn meal to stop a radiator leak. It worked. Told me to put some paint thinner in my Cushman tank to get me to the gas station when I ran out of gas. I couldn't tell the difference in power.

I've learned a lot here. I'm leaning toward the Water Wetter or maybe just another quart of antifreeze.

I use water wetter to increase cooling performance but I am not aware that it has any corrosion inhibitor properties. Even Red Line's page on it doesn't mention corrosion.

most water wetters contain sulphonic acid to break the water tension . check it every month or so with a volt meter to make sure you don't start galvanic corrosion . never used the stuff and won'r just distilled or De ionized water for me and some water pump lube .

We ran a mix of distilled water and Water Wetter in the first 455 Olds we built for my Son's RPU. When we tore the motor down it was rusted like a Mother in the cooling passages.........so much for it having any corrosion protection.

Since then we have been running Bar's Leaks Water Pump Lubricant and AntiRust in all our cars (even my daily) and when we changed the intake on his 455 the passages looked like fresh cast steel and the metal spring in the lower hose was shiny. It costs about $ 3 at Autozone.

Yes it does. In fact it right on the bottle. if you rub some between your fingers you can feel it. Feels like thin oil. I use Water Wetter and 1/2 gallon of anti-freeze. It seems to work, so far.

Soluble is a product of fat rendering, it will put a light coat of oil inside a cooling system . We used it for cutting tool coolant and it works well . We used to change it out regularly as it will grow bacteria . More than one machinist has cut himself on chips and contracted blood poisoning , just a heads up.

bennet auto sells a radiator additive to use instead of water . it offers no freeze protection , it is just to keep things lubed and clean . $4 a gallon also helps. sold by the gallon and looks just like antifreeze
