Remember that article that Sports Illustrated ran in 1961 about the cult of hot rodding? Yeah, I don't either... I wasn't born yet, but I've heard about it so many damn times that I feel like I was a regular subscriber in the day. In any case, the SI...

To read the rest of this blog entry from The Jalopy Journal, click here.
Ever get the idea you have been there before, then go look and sure enough? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=386733&highlight=rumpsville I knew the story seemed familiar when I clicked on your link!
I think that was the first issue of Sports Illustrated I ever bought or read. I can't remember much about the article though.
Call it a good rehash then... I'm on the road with my wife for our anniversary, so it will work in a pinch.
As somewhat of a closet "Beatnik", I dig all the crazy lingo. Thanks for sharing and Happy Anniversary. Transfusion, by Nervous Norvis, was always a staple on the Dr.Dimento radio show. Happy New Year to all ya' HAMB-Bones JT
Great read!! As for the photo...I can see the two guys almost praying..."oh please let us not have our engine go poof...."
One of the best car articles I ever read was in SI (I think) a looong time ago. It was about a guy who street-raced for money, drove a Mopar of some kind, I think. Said after he rebuilt the engine he would pour a quart of oil over it and drive up and down a dirt road to make it look old and tired. He was pretty cagy about picking races and stuff.
happy anniversary boss, hope you enjoy your day.and thanks for the read. ive never seen it before and it was well worth the read.sure makes me wish i could find that damn time machine!!!
OK ... that is super freaky - I just got my original copy in the mail that I bought on Ebay (with saved pennies) this morning ! Get out of my head , man!
Have this SI copy and the same photo was used on an LP record album. I always have a couple copies of each for sale at any Parts Meet I set up at. They both make great Garage Wall Art when framed. The 1957 Life magazine Hot Rod issue is also a kool read with some of the same info as the SI and the full page photo of Grabowski and the Kookie T at a drive-in.
Ha Ha! I love the second page with all the psyco-babble about how they all hate their mothers. Most fruidian analysts are the most twisted up bunch I ever met! But you never see a hot rod parked in front of a shrinks office! I also liked the comment about the guys engine "Being clean enough to eat off of"... "No way! you'de leave crumbs on it!" So true,so true.
I see my avatar on that magazine cover...my birthday present in 1961 for my 11th birthday...from Big Daddy himself...
Von Franco's "I was a Teenage Monster Shirt Painter" DVD is a must have for anyone traveling back to Koolsville!
How come everybody born after 1970 thinks beatniks were car people? Sawed-off sweatshirts, berets, shades, and sandals did not a beatnik make...
The hyperlink in @Ryan's (12/28/2011) TJJ Blog is no longer valid ... so I'm bumping this old H.A.M.B. thread with the archive of the entire article:
