I always loved how this era draws speed...

the wheels are always off the ground...
sometimes the cars are skewed or kanted forward...
and you get the feeling of out of control speed-

I've collected a few over the years. The first one I bought was a '66 Monaco GP poster for $.50 in 1975. Michael Turner, Geo Ham (Georges Hamel) and Beligond are my favorite artists of the era.

Cars and posters from that era are a big part of what is going into the car that I am mocking up now. the intent is to have look like it was originally a race car from that era.

I've picked up a couple of prints of GP race posters that I yet to have framed and find a part of a wall to hang them on.

I agree. The simplicity in style is beautiful and all the emphasis is on the essence of speed. Love it.

These are great JB. I've got a few good repops in the garage.
But did you mean to say they "hold" or possess 3 key elements?

A lot of my artwork has been influenced by the old great posters. Many a painting of mine has been formed with that art in mind.

Malcolm, thanks for the heads up at target. I'm gettin' some of those. Mr48chev I'd like to build a bugatti type 35 styled car....similar to the poster car. Good stuff!!!

    No problem, man....

It's surprising (to me) how much cool artwork Target has sometimes. I've bought some other automotive prints there and have my eye on a map of the U.S. (canvas print, again) that is made out of license plates...

I have a large collection of these I have saved over the years for inspiration. The second to the last one is a collaboration Shaw and I did during the Dynamat legacy. The last one is a current Dynamat poster, not sure of the artist. Definitely influenced by this era.

The skewed forward cars and wheels are a function of how the old cameras of the day would take pictures of moving objects. That is, a photo would have kanted forward wheels in an actual photo if the car was traveling. The faster the car, the more kanted the wheels. That artifact meant speed in the posters.

I know its true, cause I read it on the HAMB! :D

I love this type of artwork also. The local Gordman's store has some good stuff every once in awhile. Thanks for the samples. Gary

Great thread! I can't ever get enough of the Old style posters. Correct: Simple, three color, and BEAUTIFUL!

When Slick (scotrod2) and I designed the 1st Dynamat Poster with the Coupe, this was the look we were going for. It turned out great, and the REAL "Les Noise" was in the corner. The lil' helmeted "Mystery driver" Then the owner of Dynamat slipped his mohawked mug on there for the Ads in Street rodder and it lost the "look".

Slick did the layout, colors and made the magic! I only drew the coupe...

Like the Coupe itself, The second Dynamat attempt was okay, but not the "hit" the first one was.

Here is the original art work for the Coupe poster.

I also have a folder of these for inspiration.. They actually slowly flash as my screen saver when I'm not working.

I realize that a lot of these have already been posted, but I don't mind seeing them more than once! ;)

These last two are American Motorcycle race posters, but I think you'll appreciate the "look"

Created by the combination of relatively low ASAs, slower shutter speeds (than we have now), panning and, mostly, large focal plane shutters. Gary

The first two are water-based but I feel that they fit in with the overall style.

"the ballet" ! dynamic , positiv , international "monument" of car racing

Beligond shows here cool racing and security ...

and Geo Ham shows mecanical orgy and dangerous racing ...

Does anybody know really why Geo Ham stopped to draw the 24h du Mans event poster ? A way for ACO to forget the 55 catastrophe ?

These early posters are fantastic. Such incredible talent, you can feel the speed and excitement they generate. Gets your heart pumping.
