Neat. When I was there, mid-80s, everything was tuner cars and motorcycles in every variety. Do you know how long the hot rod deal has been going in Japan? Gary

That was an A-400! (never saw a '29 type before...must be a 'Phantom'.)
I watched the video 3 times for a better view of that car!

  7. Awesome! I'm watching on my phone and I'm like WTF!? Haha!

Cool is universal. And this is definitely a great way to start the day.

  12. Very enjoyable. Being half-Japanese, I know that's a lot of work and money to buy and keep these kinds of cars on the road, it takes a lot of dedication.

Is the Hot Rod scene there mostly in the Southern part of the main Island (Honshu), seems like it. I always hear about Tokyo and Yokohama which are about an hour apart I think.

I was living there in '84 and I can remember it being alive back them. I lived in a small town of 3 million by the name of TSU. It was a huge ship manufacturing district.

I remember being the first white kids in the Japanese school system.
The girls in their school uniforms and the boys in theirs. They would all run home after school and change into their cuft up Levi's and white shirts and puff their hair. At 8 years old.... No lie!

    They cling to Americana.
Levi Jeans could be sold for $150 a pair even back then.

I think what they embraced much more than our clothing, music or hot rod culture was the true American spirit of freedom and rebellion.

Fantastic write up. Thanks for bringing back fond memories!

Lived in Japan for almost three years from 1991 to 1994. Incredible car culture. Obviously most of it revolves around Japanese cars, but there is something there for everyone. Didn't see too many hot rods or customs in the smaller Northern town where I lived, but when you visit Tokyo or Yokohama, you can see anything on the street. When the Japanese pick a hobby, they tend to go all out. So many aspects of their life are regimented, their hobbies are an outlet for uniqueness, and the love of Americana drives many of them (that can afford it) in the direction of American cars.

More in Yokohama & Nagoya......not so much IN Tokyo.....but I ALWAYS walked backstreets and saw American Muscle cars/Porsches/Classic Benzs etc tucked away in car spaces where you least expected them.

Even a 60 Caddy in a glass enclosure at a temple on the top of the hill behind Kyoto.....and the backstreets you walked to get there had ACTUAL GEISHA (ie NOT prostitutes) going about their daily life....there are less than 3000 of them left!!!

I met Jive Bomber in Tokyo a few years back, and tried to show him as much as I could in a few hours......I guess now that he's been there a few times, he's starting to understand the scope of just how huge Tokyo is, and how many nooks & crannies there are with cool Americana hidden in them.

A nicer guy, you'd be lucky to meet!
