I am planning on competeing at Bonneville in 08. I will be running XF/VOT class. Where is the best source for the speed rated round edged tires everybody uses? I have heard goodyear, firestone and MT make them but I've done web searches and came up fairly empty. Right now my main concern is prices and sizes available. Thanks

Under 250 MPH the Goodyear FrontRunner tires work well, Summit or Jegs is where I have found mine, Under 150$ or so,

Over 250 MPH cost goes way up -750$ or so These are the only safe way
    That I know of

Since you are in F/VOT it is highly unlikely that running over 250 will be a concern. For proper 18 inch drive tires I and several others use Dunlop vintage race tires. Several 200+ cars are using these. Goodyear LSR tires and Dunlop tires con be obtained from http://www.rogerkrausracing.com/, amoung others. I have some Firestone, Bonneville fronts for sale, but they are 40 years old and I don't want to use them myself. They do look good.

Thanks guys! Looks like Dunlop has some that will fit my '32 18" wires but they are $423 each! Maybe I'd be better off using motorcycle tires?

This is the car I will be taking to the salt next year (after many safety mods)
I have a 2007 SCTA rule book and have been studying it in great detail.

    I definately won't be going over 250 MPH :)

I am trading my BSA and some cash for this car to fullfill my bonneville dream. I am going to make it street legal with the stock rebuilt flattie in it and then pull the lights, swap grilles, bolt in cage etc etc and put my race flattie in it out of my dragster for the trip to Utah.
The current Bonneville XF/VOT record is 117.95 MPH (it'll probably go up in the next few days) I am fairly certain I can beat that. My primative flathead HA/GR goes 106 in the quarter with 4.11 gears and that's the engine I'll be using with a .74 overdrive and taller tires.
Depending on how things go I could at least shoot for the USFRA 130 MPH club in street trim.
Mostly, I just want to run a car on the salt and have fun!

I have found used Dunlop Speedway tires cheap at times. Try to find a group that stages Vintage Indy car races and see if you can get a already shaved tire for around $100. Ask Sasco if they can steer you. I think you may have a hard time talking the inspectiors into signing off on motorcycle tires.

  7. Bringing this back from the dead, but can someone clarify if it's acceptable to use these as drive tires as well as the fronts?

Under 250 mph, they have the same cut, similar size/profiles as the Land Speed tires. Compound is probably a bit different but it sure seems like a real alternative.

Although a number of guys here race it's probably best to go to one of the racing forums such as http://www.landracing.com/ and see what you can find out.

When you show up for tech (looks just like and almost the same) just flat don't count with the inspectors.

  9. Thanks, I had been looking for a site like that to join, but that's the ticket. Found a thread that answered the question within a few minutes. They are acceptable.

    Appreciate the link.

I have spoken to a guy who was with Burt during his Bonneville runs, and he swears Burt had brand new tires. You can't believe everything you see in the movies.
