What's your flavor: The '39 or the '40 DeLuxe?

I am a 40 deLuxe guy all the way but a 39 DeLuxe and 40 Standard very close seconds. Ford got those years right! I agree on the 40 dash being the best dash
Ford ever made! I like all three!

  2. 40 with 39 doors sans wind wings.

  3. I do believe the 40 Standard has the best of both 39 and 40 Fords - but, if I had to choose between the two, 39 ....

I like the '39. But, then, you could always adapt a '39 front clip on a '40...and have 'em both, if you really couldn't decide. :D

My Dad had a new '41 when I was a tot. Sadly, we had no "full-frame" pictures of it that I can find. It was a gray, 2 door sedan, dog-dish hubcaps. Bad news was it seemed to be a target for every drunk driver in St. Louis !

My poor Dad never hit anyone in his life, but that '41 was hit about at least three times during its life from 1941 to 1950, by "bottle jockey's" who should have been kept off the road.

My dad told me the bootleggers used the 39 standards because they were cheaper to buy so that mattered when they rolled them!

There is something really appealing about the simplicity of the '39 compared to the '40 Ford Deluxe.....dash, taillights, grill, headlamps.

  8. '41 Business Coupe... I towed one home yesterday. I know it's not quite as snazzy as a '39 or '40, but I've never run with the cool kids anyway.

The '39 DeLuxe has better looking headlights, grille, dash and opening windshield. That's why I prefer them. But, I do like the 40's tail lights and trunk handle better than a '39. I had this on my '39.

I fell in love with a low mileage unrestored 39 deluxe coupe that I can not get out of my mind at Hershey many many years ago now. It would be way out of my price range today. What a cool survivor that I hope still looks the same today. Near perfect original upholstery, Crank out W/S, swan neck floor shift etc. etc.

    I'm a '39 guy all the way. That's not to say I wouldn't take a '40 though!

  13. Would take a 40 all day long

  14. Pretty much my thinking and although it's not an option, I'd trade my fleet for a '34 coupe

Easy! '39 Deluxe!!! I'm clearly biased as my high school transpo for a bit was one with a 283, that weird '58 reverse pattern three speed, Rocket mags that sorta looked like Americans, and all the other crap common to '60s hot rods. In 1981 with that car I was "persona non grata" 'cause it was all Old crap and "why would someone as young as you want any of that stuff?"

But honestly, even as a little kid growing up with my dad's '40 Deluxe, I just couldn't get with the extra bump on the hood and that grill. Just never looked right to my eye. Now, a '40 standard would be a very close 2nd choice...

  20. 40 Standard with 39 taillights. 39 crank-out windshield is nice, but those 40 wiper towers are so damn graceful. Both headlights are nice and you can switch to whatever trips your trigger.

They're both great going down the road but I like the round gauges, wood grain, with the windshield kicked out about 5 inches, eatin' bugs, wind in the hair, and the swan neck myself!

    39 for sure. Rod

  25. Ford should have stopped making new models in 1939... it was perfect.

  26. ALL-WAYS a Forty guy here but disappointed over the years that Ford dropped the convertible sedan after '39. So when I came across this Forty-ized '39 conv. sedan with '40 headlights, tail lights and trunk, there was only one thing to do. I BOUGHT IT.
    I also own a '40 DeLuxe coupe.

I have the best of both worlds. A '40 Deluxe Coupe and a '40 pickup.

Had both and loved em both but they didnt advertise the 40 as the "Fabulous 1940 Ford" for nothing. Prefer the 40 by a couple hairs over the 39's.
