'39. I like the grill, the headlights, the floor shift.
On the convertibles, the top on the '40 looks too bulky to me.
And I like the wood better on the '39 wagons. (Don't tell Sawzall )
    But, I'm prejudiced.

Definatly the 40 Deluxe. Love the grille & the headlight trim. The dash is a classic and I love the chevron taillights.

This is interesting, I would have thought '40s were a shoe-in. They are both classic and classey designs, but I prefer '39 Deluxe, they're a little cleaner. That's what I was looking for when I found and bought my '41 (it was WAAAYYY more affordable) and I think I'll still have a blast.

Someone needs to count the votes. I'm nonplussed, being a fortynut, even though there's a sweet green '39 Deluxe coupe with a blown small block I've seen in a few of the magazines that is damn near perfect.

For me the forty just seems the slicker of the two. Just an opinion.

I like em both, thats why my 40 has 39 trim and 39 front windows. I prefer the 40 dash and tailights, and grill. I have had a few deluxes previously and my sedan waiting in the wings is a deluxe.

I keep coming back to see what the latest posts are. Still amazed that the 39 seems liked more. Personally I'd take either. Well, I did. I actually wanted a 1940 deluxe coupe ever since I knew what a car was.
But the car Gods were good to me. Born in 39 and just happened to get a deal on one 1/2 block down the street. A lot of guys seem to want the car year they were born with.
To make it better I also drive a 1941 2-door that sort of found me. The year my wife was born. Yes we're old farts ! Many friends drive 39 and 40 Fords and we've been around fat fendered cars all our lives. It just seems right. When we ride in the 55 Chevy it's just a late model to us.

A lot is mentioned about the 40 dash and tail lights. My 39 has a SBC with 12V yet the dash is all original and wood grained. If the 40 dash and tail lights are so great why'd so many rodders change them? More rods of all kinds run 39 Ford tail lights than 40's.

  13. Me too, delivers the best of both!

  14. Agree on the tail lamps but I think most of the '40s lost their dash panels for the same reason the '39s lost their tailamps. The Deuce guys like both much better than the original '32 Ford parts. :D

    40 Standard.

The '39 or the '40 DeLuxe?

You aren't getting that choice here! If we could choose I'd pick a 32 Ford roadster.:)

Dang them Deuce boys! Another question? If the 32 is so great why'd them thar Deuce boys do that ?

I like the 39 better for one reason, the grill. I hate the grill on the 40. But, having said that, if I had a 39 I'd put the 40 dash in it just cause it's so clean. But... It is the third on my dream car list. I have the first that I am building, a 59 elko. The second a 30-31 tudor I'm still on the hunt for. If I can get those done then I'll worry about the 39!!

Ford after making the 39 Deluxe knew they could not improve it and did some half ass crap just to identify it a a year newer. That is my opinion and I stand by it.

Now if we are just talking Deluxe coupes I would have to say the 40. But if we are talking convertibles I would choose the 39 Deluxe. They have the cowl mounted wipers and the the top looks much better.

I had a 40 Standard Coupe and have always preferred them to the Dlx. of either year. Sort of a morph of them both I guess.

39, best looking car Ford ever made imo, I had a40 deluxe coupe and hated the grill and hood......I love the 39 lights ,front and back, the hood and grill work perfectly on the eye and the chrome windshield is a lot better looking than the rubber on the 40's, the only thing that the 40 tops the 39 deluxe on, is the dash.

Do they repro 39 headlight assemblies and are they a straight fit into 40 fenders ?

heres a photo of my 39 roadster. I bet your thinking he means convertable. No I mean roadster. 50 roadsters without side windows and a different top were made in australia before the war stopped production. I know of one other that has survived. Mine had twin carbs, on the stock flattie and straight through side pipes, big and little tyers and reversed spring eyes at the front to give a bit of a rake. the rest was stock.

My first car was a 40 delux coupe, my dad's first car was a 40 delux tudor. I've also had two 40 delux sedans, hood, dash, and grilles are cool. So I guess the delux 40's are my favorite of the 2 years....

  28. It's funny how our tastes change as we grow up. When I was a kid I would look right past a '39 to a '40 DeLuxe. As I grew older I came to appreciate both. At some point I started liking the '40 Standard over both and acquired my Standard Coupe 22 yrs. ago. I still love a well-done version of any of them (they all have their pluses). It's weird how I always wanted a '32 3-window, but now I would much prefer a 5-window. Even though I have the '40 Standard, I would love to have a nicely done '39 DeLuxe................Oh and by the way, now I eat broccoli.:D
