RPU Update

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Detonator, Jun 26, 2006.

  1. Took my birthday off today and spent it bolting my rpu together. Here's where I was before I blew it apart for paint:

    Here's where I am now:

My plan was for some sort of suede finish, but my original sheet metal was pretty straight and everything was coming together so I went for the shine. Hard to tell WHAT color it is in these photos, huh? It's a late 30's GMC truck brown.

Here's the firewall -- I'm running swing pedals, so I needed to clear the engine and make room for them, too.

    sweet truck....love it!

is that a skull shifter knob from chromed rat....

    nice details!

  8. Yep. Good eye!

I'm trying to steer clear of the skull/devil/spider web thing and just keep it clean and simple -- but those shift knobs were way to well-done to pass up.

Dude, that thing is killer. One of my favorite RPU's.

Please post lots of pics once it's painted.

That 1st pic you posted is actually my screensaver on my home system, because I want to build something very similar.

  12. I see you are really making headway now man. I really like the color, very subtle just like the rest of the truck.

I'm anxiious to see it all togeather again. Are you gonna leave the wheels the same color?

    Again, very nice piece.

  13. The wheels were the originals off a friend's '40 woodie. I p-coated them as close as I could get to the original maroon.

...I like the subtle color combo...clean...

  18. Funny you asked -- I get comments all the time on the woodie color. It's a grey-green that's loosely based on a '46 Merc chip. PM me, I'll send you the PPG formula.

3WL -- thanks for the props, your build-up was a real inspiration. The maroon and brown makes it kinda look like a restoration -- but wait till you see the seat covers (!)

I would love to know what type of rivets you used on your fire wall. Any close up shots of both sides with rivets?

    Thanks,
    Motor

  22. Shiny -- Thanks man, those Canadian Merc truck hubcaps I got from you look real good on it.

MM -- the rivets are actually rivets screws. Jim Benetiz (Rogue on the HAMB) had a bunch of 'em awhile back and I got them from him. There's a nut on one side and a little ridge on the back of the head that digs in and holds when you screw 'em down. They're just about long enough to mate two 16 ga panels, no thicker. I think they originally made them for gym lockers.

    Here it is before paint:
