No Interstates - No Chain Restaurants!

Classic car and hot rod owners, it’s time to get your motor running once again for the third annual Route 6 River to River Retro Road Trip. That’s right, this year we are adding retro clothing to the mix (optional).
Don’t have a classic car? Come see us at one of our event stops. If you are dressed in some cool vintage apparel, you might even win a prize!

The trip starts out in Davenport, Iowa on Friday morning, August 23rd. From there, we’ll head to Durant and Wilton for brunch, with your choice of the very tasty Hill of Beans Bistro in Durant, the more traditional Wilton Café in Wilton, or the world’s oldest Ice Cream Soda fountain, the Wilton candy Kitchen.

From there, it’s off to Marengo, where the Pioneer museum will open their gates and you do a free photo op with their restored vintage gas station.

Country Arts & Antiques of Marengo will have a sock hop theme and root beer floats, right on Route 6. From there, you can do a happy hour at the Ladora Bank Bistro.

Then at 5, we arrive at the City of Flags (and John Wayne’s boyhood home) Brooklyn, Iowa for our first event stop. They will be roping off the main street just for us, and there will be food from the Classic Deli & Ice Cream Shoppe.

1930s era Standard Oil station in Brooklyn that still has full service!

From Brooklyn, we’ll take a short tour of scenic Grinnell Iowa, where we will drive past the “Jewel Box” bank, Candyland Station, and the Iowa transportation museum, located in the old Spaulding Automobile plant.

Friday evening culminates in Newton, where we’ll have a Drive In movie night. Newton will be our overnight stop.

Saturday morning they’ll block off the Newton town square, when we stop at the Mid town Café for breakfast from 8:30-9:20 am, bringing with us the big car show. From there we head west, through Colfax, Altoona and Des Moines, and on to Adel, Redfield, and the White Pole Road, before we stop for lunch at the Menlo Café (and let’s not forget the Menlo Gas Station man sign built in 1934!).

Then it’s off to see the rolling hills leading to Council Bluffs and Omaha.

After that, it’s a photo op in Council Bluffs, and we back track to Atlantic. Atlantic is our Saturday event and dinner stop, as well as our overnight location. The city will open up the park for our big car show and vintage apparel contest, along with the coke museum, where they will be serving Coke Floats.

Sunday it’s breakfast at the Weather vane Café in Anita, Iowa, followed by a trip down to see the Freedom Rock. (The Freedom Rock is a large (approx. 60+ ton) boulder located in rural Iowa that is repainted every year with a different Thank You for our nations Veterans to honor their service to our country. The artist, Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II, was inspired by the movie Saving Private Ryan, as well as wanting to give Veterans a unique recognition on Memorial Day.)

After that we’ll explore the White Pole Road in a little greater depth before heading to George the Chili King in Des Moines for our finale. George promises us car hops. (Maybe we'll even get 'em on skates....)

This trip will benefit the Children’s Therapy Center of the Quad Cities, and they will be raffling off some neat stuff, as well as selling 50/50 tickets. Dahl Ford will again be coming along as well. In addition, the Colfax Iowa police department will be sending their restored 1964 Ford police car across Iowa to give us a vintage style police escort!

US Route 6 is the longest highway ever created in the US, stretching 3,652 miles from Provincetown, Massachusetts to Long Beach California. In Iowa, over a third of the signage for Route 6 has been moved out to Interstate 80. The Route 6 Tourist Association is working to re-sign the original route, and the sign are slowly returning across Iowa. For more information on this cruise, contact Dave Darby – Executive Director of the Route 6 Tourist Association at (563) 499-8211, Email at [email protected]. The reason behind this cruise is to show off all the mom and pop establishments and scenery you can find when you get off the interstate, We get some really cool cars along (many of which I hand pick to invite) And always great food (I try their stuff out before we make them a stop.) As always, it's NO interstates - NO chain Restaurants. We'll also be exploring some vintage pavement that dates back to the 1920s, as we follow the original alignment across Iowa.

I'm told people can do burn-outs in Brooklyn on our way out. Here's a few more photos.

Looks great!Wish I could be there. There's a great chapter on Grinnell's Spaulding Motor Car in "Great Cars of the Great Plains" and all of you Iowa guys should own Bill Jepsen's
exhaustive "Iowa's Automobiles" but good luck finding a copy-it's a must read.

I think I have group in Cedar Rapids that plan on meeting up with you on Route 6 just south of Amana and at least go as far as Brooklyn or Newton.

This looks like a lot of fun! We are checking dates and talking to a group of people about going. We are talking about picking a route in northern Iowa on the way there. Any one interested in hooking up for the drive east?

For a gift to me, my daughter,Abbey, sponsored the restoration of one of the Spaulding's headlamps. If you visit the museum, see if you can figure out which one. I got a nice certificate, but haven't heard much since. Thanks.-

We are looking at least 100 cars. We had a pretty good reception at Torque-fest.I hand invited a few really choice cars, so there will be plenty of eye candy.

I won't be able to do the complete trip either. I might try to do Newton and Des Moines. We'll just have to see if I have anything old enough to drive on it.
