Maroon comes from the French word 'marron' which translates into English as chestnut. Therefore maroon is a reddish tinged brown. Burgundy on the other hand is a blueish red as in red wine color.

    Acme John's '36 is maroon:

Peter Mullin's Talbot Lago is burgundy:

So if you are after a blue tinged red you are looking for a burgundy color, not maroon.

Luke...its slightly more red than maroon...but a '54 Buick color called Titian Red was a very popular color back in the mid 50s....also incorrectly called Tahitian Red...you could always put a little more brown in it to maroon it up some...I think the Bakan deuce shown had red added to it....good luck!

I immediately thought of John Mearns' car when I saw this question. Quoting the March '11 feature in R&C - '48 VW Bordeaux Red.

Man, I have a 51 A.D. and I am considering a Maroon or Burgundy . I also am looking at Copper and also a blue color. It's tough to choose with so many beautiful colors available.

I really like this color, which was very popular back in the day, but I don't know what it is. Titian red maybe?

From a mid to late 70s BMW Malaga Red in Glaseruit paint one step went on like cream and seemed a foot deep.

Graet thread, gotta be one of the hardest colors to get right. Saw a 39 ford at Kalamazoo years ago, guy said it was 1990 ford truck burgandy. No metallic, not brown.

I like '48 Ford Monsoon Maroon. It was used on the Navarro roadster which is another favorite of mine.

Here it is but in person without the flash it seems much darker. Never seen the car outside though....

  28. As you can tell, when it comes to color each person has their own idea of what is "correct". So figuring out what you want turns out taking all the suggestions and seeing (key word) what fits your idea/goal.

As stated earlier, most early maroons had a brownish tone..........but how brown (now cow?)? And do you like what's often referred to as a "muddy" color? Or do you like a "clean" color? Your best bet is to get some chip charts, or better yet, go to your paint supplier and look through their stuff (if they're willing) and find what hits your nail.

The "clean" ones look more like what some call burgundy, but here's an example of what came out of the maroon toner (straight mixing color, no blending) right off the Sikkens rack.

'84 Chyrsler Crimson Red is a nice non-metallic maroon. Painted a 40 sedan a few years ago in it, worked out real well.
