I'm excited about this. I'm willing to pay the higher price for an unbiased, genuine article. I've been doing it with theTRJ since the begining. That being said I've also subscribed to R&C and the others all along, but just because it's sooo cheap.

    I sure hope so!!

I doubt that many really care about the amount of the ads. Don't we all love to go back and read the ads in the original little books? I sure do.

I just balk at the "tech" articles that just list the web site for the expensive pre-assemble kits. That's not the hotrodding magazines that I grew up with.

I hate the fact that money has replaced the passion. I'm probably too sappy about this stuff.

I've built complete frames from magazine blueprints, wood rimmed banjo wheels from ideas garnered from a magazine. Now it's just addresses to send the check for store bought frames and steering wheels.

I really hope that I am wrong, but it just reeks of a marketing ploy to sell more magazines. We'll see.

Yea, I sure hope it has cool tech articles.

I think "Janet" just spilled his coffee all over his desk. ;-)

Naturally, I hope the little pages revival succeeds.

BTW, Dave Frieburger has mentions the JJ and the HAMB in Hot Rod.

Yes, I was shocked that not one picture or mention of The Hot Rod Revolution was in Rod and Custom. I do subscribe to R &C and have been looking every month for coverage. For those people who were not present at HRR, let me add this - it was "Hands Down" the best group of traditional hot rods that I have ever witnessed. It was a missed opportunity for any magazine. At least an Itailian magazine was paying attention - too bad I can't translate what it says. I really don't care if Source Interlink has a beef with Ryan's opinions, they denied their subscribers coverage of a great event. Shame on them! That being said, will I check out The New Little Pages - Hell yeah!

The show got more coverage here (as far as eyeballs seeing it) than it could have gotten in any magazine in the market. This sounds shitty and pompous, but the truth is - we are no longer the little guys. We are considerably bigger than any of the print magazines that serve this market.

But all of that is really beside the point. For years, I have bagged on these magazines produced by the man. I've done so for a reason... It looks like this little book could very well be a change. And, if it is, I'm gonna support it because I think it's good for all us.

I have worked in the publishing world for many years and know the b.s. that editors and designers have to go through. Owners (publishers) who are so unconnected to the magazines they produce. They rely on ad count to determine how many pages the issue will be, thus cutting pages and features (which seem to never get in the mag) They dont seem to understand that more pages, less ads can still work.
Its great to see this issue come out. Congrats Rob and Aaron...keep up the fight

And it was "live" coverage that evening on the HAMB & on Facebook. I wondered why they have never shown the HAMB Drag Nationals in the magazines and alot of local "streetrod" guys have mentioned the same thing. Hmm......interesting.

  15. Years ago I subscribed to (Ithink)Hop Up pocket size mag. I also took a bunch of car mags thru the years. When They started advertising viagra & other B S I cancelled everyone of them. I'll check this little mag out & if it's any good I'll subscribe. You can get way more car info here than any mag. Thanks again Ryan.

Billy Crewl (Hellmet) on the front cover.

Good on Billy, he told me he was in the first issue but didn't know he'd make the cover. Great shot of you and your roadster Billy! Now get it back on the road. We're both going to be burning up some beautiful weather this year if we're not on the road soon.

Congrats Billy and thanks Ryan for announcing the new rag. I'll have to search for a copy or two or three.

Well, this "little pages" sounds like it's worth checking out at least.
But I'll just go ahead and say it now... I miss Hop Up.

To me personally it's all about perspective and who's cool and who's not. I got on the HAMB 10 years ago when it was well under 500 people. I had been employed by Petersen/EMAP and was passionate and pissed at some of the happenings at the "big" magazines and actually quit over it. The HAMB saw first when I was putting together a few cool stories for The Rodder's Journal and loved the pictures for stuff like "The Joe Barnett Story" and "The Early Times Story". Eventually I got the gig doing the Goodguys magazine and turned it from TOTALLY billet to putting as many HAMBers as and HAMB friendly cars as possible on every page. I spent too much time on the HAMB for their liking and had my internet privledges taken away for a while- but eventually showed it was a good relationship. I met Kirk from the HAMB, brought him into the offices and now he runs the whole deal.
I was offered a job at R&C while at Goodguys and took it. At that point there was no problem with the HAMB and we shot PLENTY of HAMBers cars that made it into the mag and on the cover. While I was there I campaigned hard for my long-time friend Aaron Kahan to be our new art director even though they really didn't want to get rid of our old one. But that worked out and now he oversees the Art Direction over a bunch of their magazines.
The only problem- all the while I just wasn't one of the "cool guys" and always took it from the cool kids that I wasn't one of them. So be it- I never wanted to be. But I was glad I got to be a part of it and did a lot to champion the HAMB along the way even though my efforts were not always appreciated.
I have ideas where print will go in the next 5 years- I think my 40-plus as a magazine fanatic help me see things pretty clearly. Things will change. I just finished the cover feature for Rod & Kulture on Coby's van yesterday- pretty big change right there. Guys like Zombie don't care about who's in the "cool club"- it's all about the cars- as it should be.
And through it all- above all, I still love the HAMB and being able to be a part of it. Thank you Ryan.

I am sure I will check it out, but I have reserved space in my library for Rolls & Pleats, Kustoms Illustrated and Church. Plus a musty smelling pile of original little books. The HAMB rules. Thanks Ryan. Slim

  21. That is why your register number is over 4000?

Janet is jumping on the band wagon to try a get more money out of us to try and survive. Not falling for it. Janet burned a bridge with me and their attiude towards all of us here. I will continue to support the little guy like the HAMB and zombie and rolled and pleats.

Print is not the enemy, ads are not the enemy, heartless complacency and lethargy is the enemy. Ryan, I know you don't think print is the enemy - and I agree with your motivation that it may not be the most obvious business model these days but looking ahead 5 or 10 years, please don't forget these heady days of creativity, connectedness, and personal involvement that is sustaining you at the moment. Before all the magazines went corporate they too were once young and alive and interesting. Too many managers meeting in the conference rooms sucks the creativity out of any room. As soon as the bosses are more concerned about the "stock holders" the end product becomes a copycat effort while everyone worries "what if the other guys got it right?" "They got girls! We need girls!", They have picture pages of 3/4 front cars at car shows! We need picture pages of 3/4 front cars at car shows!" "Old is the new new. We need old."...and so on and so on until everyone looks and sounds alike. Then all the players change jobs and bring the same formula to the next job and another generation of sameness is extended onto the magazine newsstands.

There are some really good magazines out there as you rightfully point out. And there are already some very stagnant car website/forums out there too. So it's not "new media" vs. old. It's new thinking vs. tired formulas.

Like everyone before you, challenges lie ahead that will test your values/commitment and integrity. Keep the faith. Stay interested.

what is this print version of the jalopy journal you speak of?

  27. Thats because he's been registered at least 3 different times.

look up some of his past user names.

i for one hope this thing works out. i like magazines, but i like less of them every day. i always give a new one a chance. i think RF and Kahan are a good combo on this. HRD is a band wagon magazine that sorta gets it but still feels like hot rod. i think R&C gets it more and this little book should feel a litle more like home.

    we'll see.

I can't imagine a scenario that would cause me to put my passion behind the bottom line. I mean, don't get me wrong - this is my business. This is how I feed my family... This is my career... I understand that.

However, I don't have huge financial aspirations. I just don't. I have gigantic fucking publishing aspirations, but none of that is driven by green. It's driven by my absolute passion for these old cars.

And frankly, I'm not all that different from a lot of guys in the industry. The difference is that I'm in a position to somewhat control my own destiny. I got here by really hard work, absolute luck, really great friends (Rob Fortier had a lot to do with my routes), and well... You guys.

It's pretty humbling when I think about it all. I'm living my dream... And I'm not doing so because of anything I really did all that well. I'm doing so because of other people trusting me, believing in me, etc... That thinking alone would keep me from hiring an ad staff and going for broke.

    ........

Now, all that said and despite what my reputation might tell you - I have no interest in seeing the print world die. I have a great deal of interest in seeing the print world change. It's totally selfish reasoning... Hell, I bet I have one of the largest vintage car magazine collections in the country... I do love print despite all of the limitations. Remember, I'm a traditionalist to the core.

Corky Coker once told me that the bigger the glass is, the more everyone can drink. I believe that if we support content oriented magazines (like Rod & Custom's Little Pages appear to be) our glass will grow and we will all be better for it.

As for selling editorial... I'll never stop bagging on publishers, magazines, editors, or writers for doing that.

I just hope thel new little pages are not whores to their advertisers. I for one think the magazines need to do real world testing of their advertisers products without holding back any punches. Show installations with all the ease AND difficulties they encounter, kind of a customer "quality check ", and rate the products accordingly. Maybe then the manfacturers will take notice of any flaws in engineering and correct them.
