So when you say open up the stock rod, you mean enlarge the piston pin hole, or bushing. I did this using 351 Cleveland pistons in a 400 Ford (same block as a 351 Modified).

Do you have a BMW and/or Mahle part number? What is the compression height difference to the Buick 263 OEM piston? What does the piston dome look like? And lastly what compression ratio do you aim to achieve?

    Thanks! John

Yes i must open the Hole from 20,5 to 22mm
    The "Mahle-Original"-Part-No. is : 0802801.
(There must be a Picture from the Dome when you found it)
    The Compressionheigh is 46,9 mm.
I dont now the CR but the Dome is lower than the Buickpiston.
I wanna Mill The head (maybe the Deck too)for that i have nearly 8:1, next Winterbreak.
This Season i will drive with the stock Head.

What s the reason for using BMW pistons instead of Buick ?
Better rings and less friction ?

Sorry RainierHooker, we re hijacking your topic I think :)

No worries guys. This is all quite facinating. What year 316 are the pistons from? Its nice to see that there's crossover potential from one of my other great passions. The Buick shares its gararge with an E30 M3 and an '84 325...

I mean the Pistons are from a '75-'82 316 model.
When i have it all assembled ,i will check that the Deckhigh
and valveclearance is well for that pistons.
I'm veryvery excited about, how its works.

    Hi Rainier,
Your Car looks very solid, but how old are the Tyres?
They looks nice, but they are yet available? what for a Brand they are?
I can imagin that they are stonehard.

And it looks like do you have the Doorlock on the Passengerside, like original?
I have changed the complete Doorhandle from right to left and left to right,Its all
    much easyer then.

Jenz .. It a piece of rust :p
Bought it 1200 $. Cheap for a Buick.
I ve been asked if it burned .
I gave the 248 engine to a friend, my first goal was to change for a V8 Oldsmobile, but I changed my mind and found a 1951 263.
For now, it s stored outside, I have to finish my OT Rambler 1966 before starting working on the Buick. I just have a small 12 x 24 garage.
This gave me time to learn welding :p

The whole story of my 38 is here ( in french ):
    http://amateurdebeauxchars.forumactif.com/t6662-buick-1938-envie-d-un-jouet

You may consider funny what I do on the 66 Rambler . All is home made with basic tools :p The final goal is a #7120 Jeep head and a Buick 3800 supercharger :p

See there : ( english this one )

Check out teambuick.com in there straight eight section. Start reading. There is one post called anything new from the straight eight hot rodders that I suggest u take a pad of paper to make notes. Also if you are rebuilding the 248 look for a set of rods from a JAG xj6 .they r slightly shorter then stock but have basically same dimensions. Big end and small end. They make for a nice cheap alternative. I have a 40 limited with the 320 I am makin parts for.

A pontiacs HEI is a drop in upgrade with lite mods.

Thanks guys, Its nice to have a driver that I can work on at my own pace. I can't wait to tear into the car full bore though...

Yes, the locking door handle is on the passenger side. I was going to try and find another one to put on the driver's side too, but its one of those things that is low on the list. Really its a moot point since the lock on the passenger door doesn't work anyway ;)
The tires are old. The fronts are probably 20-30 year old STA truck tires, in 650-16 size. The rears are -really- old Mobil-Brand 650-16's. Front and rear have silly port-a-walls on them. The tires are in really good shape, not weather-checked, hold air, and have lots of tread. But they are quite hard and they track pretty badly. I'm just waiting for a check for a lot of owed back-pay, and the second that gets resolved, new tires will be on order.

    Oh man.....
When I drive with my Buick ,I dont like it ,everytime the
same Questions, like: "What for a Car is it?:.. a what.. ? a Bohickk..??".
"How old is the Car ??":..oohh it looks like are frome the 'WALTONS' ".
And the mostly question is,everytime :" when you wanna fix/finish it ???"

I like to stand (unknown) between the people arround my (dirty)car when they talk
about :.. the unshiny old Paint, the old original "stinky"Interior and the "missing" Parts
(all the moldings,Footsteps,Enginesidewalls,Hubcaps and Rings..) .I gave them all
Right, about "this" bad Car ,then i jump in the Car and drive away.
    HaHa..
    Thats Funny...
I like to drive a Trafficlightrace with (like upper ) european 'SO NICE SHINY' Cars from the 50's to 70's,with theyr small qiuet Engines.
    HaHa..
Mostly when I must filling Gas in my Car ,I will do it at late Evening or early Morning-
Time, then I'm there for me allone.

    Hi Buick Guys,
I'm also a german Buick 1938 Coupe driver. I bought this car 2007 with new paint and interieur....but after some miles I checked buying a piece of sh...
This car was customized a long time ago in a really bad work, so I had to do a completely restauration. I bought many parts to bring it back in almost original look. but the most impressive thing is the engine. it is a modified BBC with 500HP on a 4L80E transmission. suspension is a Jaguar XJ axle at front and rear. after four years of work the car looks great again....and shiny
(sorry Jenz! same car, different styles) ;)

it is a lot of pleasure to annoy brandnew Porsche or BMW with 300HP with this old car....no chance boys :D

... but I miss one question I hear every day "how many gas does it need?" much less than having fun with it....

    best wishes to all
    Cadman

Not really anything new to note. Been putting in a lot of extra hours at work and I'm getting ready for a fairly long business trip starting next week. When I get back though I should have plenty of time, motivation, and some extra cash to keep me busy for a while.

Sorry to hear about your 263, it sucks to have something so 'new' fail so quickly. I learned that lesson with another of my cars.

Thanks, I'll be in Iowa. Since I'm being provided a rental-car by my employer, I hope to do some hunting on my time off. I'm hoping to come back with more baggage than I left with.

Well, yesterday we drove the Buick up to a BBQ put on by the Taildraggers about 30 miles north of us. On the way there, the brakes were getting pretty spongy and on the way home I lost them completely. I babied the car home with judicious application of Clutch and Handbrake and once I got home I pinpointed the culprit. My master-cylender is just plain shot. All maner of fluid is dripping from the shaft boot.

Needless to say, the big Buick is out of commision 'till parts come in. But here's a few pics of the car at the BBQ...
