I had not worked with this stuff before.

But I'm building a car right now where the ground clearence is going to be tight, so I bought a couple of lengths of 3' X 3" oval from Dr Gas.

The acctual size of the 3" tube is 2 1/4" by 3 3/8", and that extra 3/4" of clearence is going to make a real difference.

I really liked the straight tubing ( I also got one 45deg bend ), but I wasn't sure about the transitions.

I thought the ones they sell looked like they'd need a lot of space, and they are kind of expensive too.

So I decided to try and make some myself, before I'd order them.

I need the transitions to be in a bend ( because of the space issues ), and I tried to hammer the oval shape into it with hammers and my anvil.

That did not work that well, because the bends do not have a uniform wall thickness.
The inside of the bend is thicker...

So then I made this tool.

Its some sections of thick wall round tubing, with some 3/16" strap wrapped around it to get to the exact size and dimensions of the tubing I bought.
And it has a tapered end that makes it easyer to shove into a piece of 3" round tubing.

I ovaled out the ends of two pieces of tubing.

And tack welded them up in the car.

Now I can take it back out to Tig weld all the seams.

And then I can start on building a new firewall.

  2. Nice. Ya make it look easy, even though it aint! I guess you can buy mufflers with the oval inlet/outlets?

I hope it's gonna be a really well insulated new firewall and floorboards, or there's gonna be a whole new meaning to the term "hot car".

That exhaust system is a nightmare.

No, its getting regular 3" mufflers ( on flanges, so they can be replaced with straight pipe )

The tubes will curve up to go over the rear axle, and I'm going to transition them back to round at that point.

Looks a bit shoddy. You should practice some.... on my car....

Looks as though you solved your problem quite well. Nice work.

Yeah, Dynamat or something like that.
And maybe heatshields on the exhaust side.

Also, I'll keep the distance less tight as I usually do.
And I'll make sure there will be some airflow, when the car is moving.

    Its a 180deg header system.

    Home made quad Weber setup.

Using 1 1/3rd of Citroen/Maseari sets, and a early Vette Rochester lower Fuel Injection intake.
    ( 3 per car, I used 4 )

    Thanks guys...:)

Yeah, the car itself is O/T, but the oval tubing will be useble on other low vehicles.

I like the tubing they sent me, and the smaller dia tubing is cheaper.

    Beautiful work, as usual!
    I'm a big fan!

  13. Alex, I found Heartthrob Exhaust out of Minnesota for supplies when I was at the shop. They seem to have a ton of hard to find materials and will give a price break to shops and professionals like yourself. :)

Looks awesome, but why the crazy set instead of just standard V8 headers? I am assuming some difficult clearance issues but looks like a fairly standard car from what I can see otherwise.

been using oval tubing for a long time...the last of the Camaros and Firebirds didn't have room for a 3 inch tube to go under the transmission cross member on the driver side ..a short run of oval and you gain an inch and a half of clearance.

A 180Deg system splits the V8 up by firing order.

So each header half "sees" a 4inline.

Because the exhaust pulses are evenly spaced with a 180deg system, the scavenging is better ( each exhaust pulse helps the next one )

Its crazy overkill for a street car, but I've wanted to build a car with a V8 on Webers, with a 180deg header system for a long time.

I'm finally getting around to doing it...:) :)

Thanks for the nice words, guys...

Yeah, but the REAL reason to use 180 Deg headers......THEY SOUND BITCHIN' !!!

I have a 180 deg system on my GT1 road racing Corvette - sounds like a crazed V6. Raises the octave of the exhaust so it is much easier to pass sound checks at restrictive tracks, too.:)

When you tig them together.Purge the tubing with argon.Weld a little hotter trying to burn through. The inside of the tube will have a smooth weld 100% penatation.Try it on scrap first.
