I think the problem is with the Rods, either mis-matched are wrong end cap on wrong rod.. IMHO

acetone and transmission fluid, half and half, soak it for a few days and give it a whack.

you are doing some great work and I would do the same thing after hearing the prices on doing the interior.
I gotta admit I really like the big 8" chop but then how the hell could you be comfortable in that. Cool over function is your choice....
