cheater slicks
how old can cheater slicks be to race them???
I would like to have a pair but I wonder if the idee to buy used old one is very good |
Re: cheater slicks
It all depends on how they're stored. If they were kept in a real dry place they'll harden and won't be worth a damn at the strip.
I'd just buy new ones if you've got the loot. http://www.radirwheels.com/contents.htm |
Re: cheater slicks
what do you guys think about that slicks from speeway - they should be for my roadster - are 8x15 rims good for that or should I use 7x15 - I only wonder if they are wide enough to have the right traction
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/eCCSto...m/91058630.jpg Cheater Slicks Remanufactured cheater slicks use premium radial cases and are retread using the original molds. The slicks are approximately 7 1/2" wide and 28" tall and mount on 15" rims. |
Re: cheater slicks
The Speedway slicks look cool.
Those grooves aren't really going to help when you hit the wet stuff. It got to be the rage for a while to run gennie slicks on the street in the late 50's. More than a few guys totalled their cars when the rains came. I didn't total mine, but ended up looking at oncoming traffic through the passenger window on a two lane. I did ok handling a car at the time, but once the slicks let go nothing I did brought the car back. I was lucky that the slide was a long one, scrubbed off a lot of speed and when the car finally ran off the road I locked up the brakes in the dirt and hit a small tree with the front bumper resulting in no damage to the car or myself. And then there was the day I loaned the car to dad and he drove around the always wet corner down the road a ways. Little brother says he never saw anybody parallel park a car going backwards and sideways. Dad was a helluva good driver and going sideways was nothing new to him. That was the end of the slicks on the street though.... |
Re: cheater slicks
My old man has a picture of him and Mom driving away from their wedding in his new '67 SS Chevelle and you can clearly see the Cheater Slicks on it.
Dad said he swapped ends on the highway one rainy night as he popped over a hill at about 60mph. Never left the Road, but that was enough for him to take them off the next morning. |
Re: cheater slicks
I have those cheaters from Speedway. They are very good for a street driven car. They also are VERY loose when it is wet! If you drive on ice and snow, they are about that same felling. They also were like iron. Ryan also has some Hurst Cheaters on his 38. He probably ran a second and a half slower than with real slicks at the HAMB Drags. They spun the whole way down the track.
I do notice better traction than with the radials on my 54 around town though. The smoke the produce is quite impressive also http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthre...mlins/grin.gif As for as old cheaters, we mounted some 30 year old Englewoods on my boss' raodster for the drags, he bought new slicks after one run. |

Rainer is reading the posts from a different computer now, he forgot his password so he called me to post this reply (is this guy crazy or what???) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthre...mlins/grin.gif
He wants to have a second set of wheels just for race, do the speedway slicks improve traction, yes or no? in other words: should he buy them or not??? who has/had them, how's your experiance? |
Re: cheater slicks
I have a set of HURST on my 55 and they are put on radial casings and don't have the wrinkle affect as with the real bias slicks tires.....great for the street and look great though....
|
Re: cheater slicks
The speedway slicks and hurst slicks are the same tire, they are much stick-e-er than the radir slicks.
the radir is the same tire marketed by coker and is labeled by mickey thompson. i switched from the coker/radir/mt slicks 15x10 and went to the 15x8 speedway/hurst slicks and gained a lot more traction. http://www.hotrodsbyglen.net/27wslicks.jpg |
Re: cheater slicks
Glen, I just fell in love with your T!! The slicks give a real badass look!!

Re: cheater slicks
Reminds me of the song "Cheater Slicks" by the Four Speeds.

[/ QUOTE ] Wait a minute, you lost me here. He wants a "second" set of tires for the strip? Why would he even be thinking about cheater slicks then? Just buy good old fashioned slicks and you'll have all the traction you know what to do with...unless you plan on running a blown & injected something or other. |
Re: cheater slicks
Yeah, if he really wants to go to the strip, buy newer slicks!@ The Hursts are good but nothing compared to modern slicks.
Baumi, if you read this, your headers go out Monday. I labled them Used/repainted headers $40 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthre...mlins/grin.gif |
Re: cheater slicks
thanks guys - I don't wanna buy modern slick - of course they are better but I didn't like the style - I drive my roadster with my locked rear end and diagonal firestones in 12.9 on the quatermile - but the spinning is too bad for me so I'll try it with such cheaters - so these tires from speedway looks god for my need

Re: cheater slicks
Glen ,you say you went to the hurst /speedway slicks and they fit a 15x8 wheel? I thought they only had 7" wide slicks and is to narrow for a 8-8.5 wheel, from what I remember and have been told, what is the tread width on yours? , just curious as I need a set for the 15x8.5's that I bought that I bought from dooley.I know Hurst Tires lists a 8-9" slick, but you have to provide the cores,at least the last time I called em. or will the 7 be fine on my wheels -anybody?
|
Re: cheater slicks
Mike, I just stuck the Speedway/Hursts on some 8" rims no prob. The cores are actually a 235 tire.

Re: cheater slicks
The radir m/t slicks don't look much like a real old style slick. They bulge way too much in the center of the sidewall. Also, M/T never put the logo on the side of the tire, just the size.
I run a pair of M/Ts on my plymouth. Never tried them at the strip, but just on my concrete driveway they do not hook up at all. I've also tried M&H with no traction. I've got a pair of hoosier recaps, and a pair of what I think are bruce slicks, which I haven't tried, but don't expect them to hook up either. In the rain they are no worse then a minnesota winter. If you can handle the snow, you can handle slicks. Dave |
Re: cheater slicks
No Mike, I switched wheels too, I went to a 15x7 with the speedway/Hurst slick.
