392 Flywheel on a 331 Hemi

Does anyone out there know if a 392 flywheel will work on a 331 hemi (extended bell)? I currently have a PowerFlite setup & would really like a third pedal in the cdan's future. Thanks.

CHECK THE BOLT PATTERN ON THE CRANK, DOESN'T LOOK THE SAME TO ME.

This is the bolt pattern on a 331 and I think 392 also.
check the offset on the two holes at the bottom of photo.

I think it is the same bolt pattern that MOPAR has used on EVERYTHING since the creation of DIRT.........

Re: 392 Flywheel on a 331 Hemi

I have been looking through Ceridono's book & the only passage I can find is ' ... stock hemi flywheels from '51-'58 mounted to the crankshaft with eight bolts & registered on the outside diameter of the crankshaft flange ... ' A 426 flywheel needs mods as it registers differently on the crank. Unfortunately I cannot get access to the crank any time soon ... distant storage & another tranny (Powerflite) is hooked on the end http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthre...lins/crazy.gif

Then again HotHeads lists the following flywheels ..

Chrysler Flywheel - Aluminum - 13# '51 - '56
Chrysler Flywheel - Aluminum _ 13# '57 - '59

Thanks again for the responses.

This be a 331 bored out 20 thousands. Its a 55 and that crank adapter was made for it. That is what your crank looks like.

if you still can't get a look at your 331 crank and still need to know the bolt pattern, I can take a rubbing off the back of mine, [53 with extended block] scan it and e-mail it to ya..Let me know via e-mail.
Gotta love electronic technology.

BTW, every hemi book I have says chrysler/dodge never put a manual tranny behind a 392 Hemi. May I assume you're working with an automatic?
I'm using a poly-head dodge truck stick flywheel [thanks again, Silent Rick] behind my 331. Seems to work ok but I don't have everything assembled yet.

Interesting point ... the closest manual trans might be the Fluidmatic auto/manual trans that everyone dislikes.

Further fuel ...

Re: 392 Flywheel on a 331 Hemi

My experiece is that every thing interchanges. I have used the 6 hole and the 8 hole flywheels. I think the 6 hole ones came from the FH 6's. I have used them on the Dodges and the Chryslers. I prefer the 6 hole ones due to their lighter weight. Some of the 6 hole ones came with odd ring geares but the ring gears from the Powerflight auto's can be removed and substituted onto the flywheel. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthre...lins/smile.gif
