does anyone know if you can use brake fluid in a hydraulic floor jack ?

it seems like it should be the same stuff but I am not sure,
is there a hydraulic only fluid ?

thanks for the info, I am sure I am not the only one wondering :)

  2. no ... most floor jacks use an ISO 32 hydraulic oil ... using brake fluid, tranny fluid, or motor oil will screw up the seals.

no brake fluid normally ruins the seals for some reason. use hydraulic fluid - should be easy to find and is cheap.

I just asked a friend last weekend what he used in his jacks and he said he's used ATF for years. I guess if your going to the store anyway, how much more $$ can hydraulic cost then ATF.

  6. I used ATF in a Walker.

Took 20 years before the leaks started.

None of the 4 jacks leak now, but if one did I'd probaby replace the factory oil with USA made jack oil.

Ive always used hydraulic jack oil and never had a problem..My Craftsman jack is over 25 years old and still going strong..with proper maintenance it should last a 100 years!!!!!!!!!!

I had a hydraulic and air tool repair business for a number of years and the most common reason for having jacks go bad was the use of brake fluid. The reason has already been stated.................JUST REMEMBER IT:cool:
